What do YOU get out of this? Pearl of Wisdom How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time! What do YOU get out of this? 2/5/2019

What do YOU get out of this? Pearl of Wisdom “Everyone has to find the right path. You can't see it, so it's hard to find. No one can show you." Charlie Knight, Ute What do YOU get out of this? 2/5/2019

Today’s Lesson Today we will be talking about setting personal goals. 1. Read a new story about William 2. Learn a process for setting reachable goals based on our values 3. Close with a Review & MiniQuiz 2/5/2019

Questions after reading: William’s Story 2 Let’s read along with the story. “A few days later, William was on his way back from a sweat…” Questions after reading: What does William say about what is TRULY IMPORTANT to him? Why do you think he walked out of the restaurant? Have you ever felt like that, or done something similar? What is most important to YOU at this point in YOUR life? 2/5/2019

Setting Goals Self-improvement is harder when we don’t know where to start. Goal setting begins by thinking BIG, by imagining what could be better in our lives…. then focusing on the details. 2/5/2019

Setting Personal Goals, Step 1 STEP 1: Identify your VALUES, the things that are TRULY MOST IMPORTANT in your life. William might say that he values: “Sobriety, contributing to family, being trustworthy.” WHAT ABOUT YOU? 2/5/2019

Setting Personal Goals, Step 2 STEP 2: Establish LONG TERM GOALS (requiring several months or years) based on a value. Then imagine positive outcomes of reaching it. Based on the value of BEING TRUSTWORTHY, William might say: “I want to earn the trust of my family and community over the next year.” “When I reach this, I’ll feel proud of myself, and prove myself to Christine & her family.” 2/5/2019

Setting Personal Goals, Step 3 STEP 3: Establish SHORT TERM GOALS (requiring only days or weeks) based on a long term goal. Based on the long term goal of EARNING TRUST, William might say: “I want to be truly helpful to my family this month, and get involved in weekly community activities.” 2/5/2019

Setting Personal Goals, Step 4 STEP 4: Identify ACTION STEPS (things you could do right away) to begin on a short term goal. Based on the short term goal of BEING HELPFUL TO FAMILY, William might say: “I could clean up the yard, fix that leaky faucet, tune up the car, and make repairs to Gramma Sis’s roof this week.” 2/5/2019

Setting Personal Goals, Step 5 STEP 5: COMMIT TO ACTION! Make a private/public commitment to 1-2 action steps this week. Do not bite off more than you can chew! William might commit to: “This week, I will clean up the yard and make repairs to Gramma Sis’s roof.” 2/5/2019

Lesson Summary Today, we have explored some of the values that are most important to us. We have created both long and short term goals that help us move forward while honoring those values. In our next class, we will explore the way that little problems can turn into big ones and pull us away from our goals, especially when we are under stress. 2/5/2019

Workin’ with Tradition Key Point #1 The path to self-improvement begins with the vision of a better future, and the courage to take the first few steps. 2/5/2019

Workin’ with Tradition Key Point #2 Long-term goals take time to reach, and should be based on our values. Short term goals and action steps serve as markers along the way, motivating us during periods of doubt & uncertainty. 2/5/2019

MiniQuiz #2 √ Let’s complete Part 1 of the MiniQuiz to test our new knowledge. In Part 2, we will apply this to Bonnie’s problem. 2/5/2019

In closing What is ONE THING you learned in this class that you will remember after leaving? 2/5/2019
