Antithesis: against the thesis (argument) Warm-Up Day : 8.27.14 Prefix: Anti- Definition: Against Example: Antithesis: against the thesis (argument) What is the meaning of the song you choose? Why did you choose this song?

FLORANCE & THE MACHINE WHAT & WHY WHAT: How is language expressive of culture? -in the study and identification of literary devices in song WHY: Because literary devices/figurative language are used in writing and speaking to convey a message and influences our reactions to what is being said. FLORANCE & THE MACHINE Is an indie rock band from England Known for haunting lyrics that utilize references to mythology, literature, and are steeped in figurative language.

Activity Identification of literary devices in your song: -go through your lyrics and highlight all examples of figurative language. -next to the highlight, write down if it is a simile, metaphor, etc.

Now that you have identified the literary devices, go back to the song and write what each of these devices truly means—what are they saying? After you complete that, write a new analytical paragraph on the song lyrics sheet that that answers the questions: what is the meaning of the song? what evidence is used that proves this meaning? (cite it)

Closure Following today’s activity, how did studying the literary devices change your interpretation of the song? How does this show the influence of literary devices on the written word?
