A discussion about the current uses of telehealth to support individuals receiving community based pulmonary rehabilitation.

In the beginning… 2008

Pilot results 2011 Mean improvement walking distance 37% Mean improvement in CRDQ scores dyspnoea 2.7, fatigue 2.7, emotional function 2.4 , mastery 1.7 Cost per patient decreased from £131 to £76 per patient The average cost of admission due to exacerbation is £2602, if that admission could be avoided cost reduced by 40% (£1041 saved) One admission per patient per class could save £24,984 per annum in NHS Lothian alone *all figures from Barrow, Godden and McClusky 2011

Pilot Results The Patient Perspective 93% of patients felt safe during exercises 95% felt the class was beneficial 95% found they were able to control their breathing more easily 69% felt very comfortable or comfortable with the idea of doing the class by video link before; and 81% after the programme *all figures from Barrow, Godden and McClusky 2011

Summary Data demonstrates that delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation using video conferencing is at least as good as a traditional model and is acceptable to patients. http://www.sctt.scot.nhs.uk/pulmonaryrehab.html for full report
