Age of Exploration: Essential Questions Why was there a sudden urge to explore? Who initiated exploration?

Why was there a sudden urge to explore? Renaissance brought a new way of thinking and new technology Wanted quicker ways to get to Asia to trade goods Why? Because land travel was too expensive 3. Fame 4. Spread religion

Who started exploration? Prince Henry the Navigator Portugal Born 1394, died 1460 Son of John 1 and Phillipa of Lancaster

Prince Henry the Navigator Prince Henry never journeyed to sea! He only organized expeditions of sailors to explore West Africa In 1416, he founded the School of Navigation in Portugal

NEW PAGE!! Astronomers, geographers, mathematicians studied new methods of traveling by sea. Trips were planned using new maps and tools and information about wind currents in the Atlantic Ocean
