Our session this morning… “Maximising civil society’s use of digital tools and resources for impact” …aims to highlight some of the many digital tools and resources to maximise the impact of civil society …aims to ‘show by doing’ Adam Smith International

Our Agenda Firstly, Introduce yourself to two people sitting around you. Brainstorm some research questions you faced recently in your work. What information did you need? Was it available easily? Did you trust the information you found? What were some of the barriers to accessing it? Then: we will take a look at some relevant resources: 9.45 – 10.15 Joy Mabenge, BHRRC Comfort break 10.30 – 11.00 Tholakele Nene, Oxpeckers 11.00 – 11.30 Rishon Chimboza, Extractives Hub Finally, in your groups, take one of your research questions and collaborate to find the best resources, data and information available. Features Adam Smith International Explore a topic Over 40 topics on Petroleum, Mining and Cross-Cutting Specifically created for the 80% non experts Each topics contains the same sections: Overview, Topic Library, Guides, Training and Events Overviews are 15-20 page document summarising the key essentials of the topic and are written by sector experts Topic Library contains all the resources related to that Topics Guides are “step by step / how to” resources relating to the Topics Training and Events – related to the topic Adam Smith International

Features Adam Smith International Explore a topic Information and resources relating to the country highlighted on the map Resources are divided according to mining or petroleum sectors Resources include: Official Government documents (policies, laws, acts) Publicly available contracts (via Resource Contracts) Country analysis (specific to that country) Country comparison (analysis that compares highlighted country with others countries) Useful weblinks coming soon – e.g. ministries, agencies, think tanks, particular to the highlighted country Adam Smith International

Features Adam Smith International Explore a topic A help desk, which offers personalised support for gathering information (“I can’t find what I’m looking for) and for expert advice (“I don’t have the capacity / expertise to solve this”) The service is free of charge to government officials in DFID focus countries Timeframe for projects – from 1 day up to 3-4 weeks Very tight focus on each project – looking to help solve a particular short-term need EH has a panel of over 50 international experts, covering a wide range of subjects Projects could include desk research (conducted out of London), bespoke training, or specialist assistance from an international expert (likely to be virtual, but face to face is also possible) Adam Smith International
