A Memorable Journey

What does it mean to migrate?

What does it mean to migrate? The movement of persons from one country or locality to another.

Why do people migrate? What causes people to migrate? What is the effect after people migrate? Who are some groups of people you know of that have migrated?

How does migration affect the people who migrate? How does it affect the place they migrate to? Do you have a migration story?

Jacob Lawrence was an artist born in 1917 in the New Jersey Jacob Lawrence was an artist born in 1917 in the New Jersey. In 1941 he painted The Migration of the Negro and told the story of a great movement of African Americans from the south to the north. His parents were part of this journey.

Let’s look at some of his Migration Series Let’s look at some of his Migration Series. Try to answer the following questions. What do you see? What is happening? What is the story about? What is the mood? What did the Jacob Lawrence do to create that mood? What is the cause and effect of this migration story?

Your challenge is to tell a personally meaningful story in a three part drawing or triptych. Your story can be about you or a family member.
