Mixed Form To Fraction Form 2 3 This picture shows the fraction 1 . The complete circle on the left is selected and of the other circle is selected. A fraction such as 1 that has a whole number part and a fraction part is a mixed number. 2 3 2 3

a b Every whole number or mixed number can be written in fraction ( ) form.

Every whole number or mixed number can be written in fraction ( ) form. a b What does that mean?

Look at the circles below … Split into THREE slides 1 3 Each circle is divided into three parts. Each part is Add up all of the shaded parts and you get . Count them and see. 5 3

The fraction form for 1 is 2 3 5 3 5 3 Split into THREE slides

How to calculate fraction form Split into THREE slides 2 3 You can calculate the fraction form for 1 by multiplying the whole number 1 by the denominator 3 and then adding the numerator 2 for a numerator of 5 in the fraction form.

Mixed Form To Fraction Form Of course, you can look at the picture to see that there are 5 one-third units or . Also, you can think of the unit 1 as . Add to the partial unit for the fraction form . This picture shows that 1 = + = . 5 3 3 3 3 3 2 3 5 3 5 3 2 3 3 3 2 3

Mixed form to fraction form- an example

Elu and Lallo made 7 pies, each with 4 pieces for the 11 people in their family. On their way home, Elu and Lallo got hungry and ate 5 whole pies plus two extra pieces from another whole pie. Is there enough pieces to feed each member of their family?

So Elu and Lallo ate 5 whole pies and 2 slices from one whole pie: 5 2 4

Now to rewrite that as a fraction: 5x4+2 4 22 4 =

Because they bought 7 pies with 4 pieces, it can be written in fraction form as: 7x 4 4 28 4 =

We can go ahead and subtract the fraction they ate from the total now: 28 4 22 4 6 4 - = So out of the 28 fourths of a pie, there were only 6 fourths left and because they have 11 people in their family we conclude that there is not enough pie for everyone.

We also conclude that Elu and Lallo are a couple of giant hogs
