Ferris T24 Pathways Today we are discussing your T24 options after high school. Your options after high school include: Work force Apprenticeship Trade School Community College 4 Year College/University Military Lets talk about the Military pathway first

What do I need to do to join the Military? Obtain a high school diploma. Meet with recruiter. Take the ASVAB military entrance exam and meet minimum score to enlist. Pass the physical fitness test. Pass a background check. Sign and enlist. Success in any branch of the Military depends on a good education, and a high school diploma is most desirable. Candidates with a GED (General Education Development certificate) can enlist, but some Services may limit opportunities. It is very difficult to be considered a serious candidate without either a high school diploma or accepted alternative credential. In any case, staying in school is important for entering the Military. The next step you need to take is to meet with a recruiter in hopes to gain a better understanding where you want to enlist. Once you have an idea where you want to enlist, you have to take the ASVAB military entrance exam and meet minimum score to enlist. For example, Air Force requires a minimum ASVAB score of 54. Keep in mind that the higher you score, the more options you have available to you in the Military.

University Pathway Now lets talk about the University Pathway.

What is a University? A private or government funded college that offers 4-year Bachelor degrees in Liberal Arts (BA) and/or Sciences (BS). May offer higher education degrees including Master and Doctoral degrees. On-campus housing is available and usually required for Freshman. (E.g. Whitworth University requires incoming freshman to live on campus for their first year.) Some private schools have a religious affiliation.

How do I get into a University? Take college prep courses. Have a good cumulative GPA (9-11th Grade). Take an algebra based lab science (Chem or Physics) Take a foreign language. Most Universities require at least two years of the same foreign language. Take SAT or ACT. Complete admission application. Found online and must be submitted by application deadline date. Admissions is based on holistic review, however, grades (what classes you get those grades in, ie. course rigor is important) and test scores (SAT/ACT) are one of the main criteria for acceptance into a 4 year university A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required to be admitted into a 4 year school (How many students do you think get in with a 2.0, not many) If your transcript provides proof that you have been steadily increasing your grades after a difficult patch, you still have a chance of getting in with a lower GPA The cumulative GPA that the 4 year universities will be looking at for admissions decisions is your GPA at the end of your Junior year, not your senior year (Your senior year GPA will not be available yet when they make those decisions)

Community College Pathway

Community College A two-year college that offers certificates, diplomas, and Associate degrees (AS or AA). Most credits will transfer to a 4-year University within the same state, especially when getting an Associate degree (AA). Some Community Colleges also offer Trade School Programs. Certificate programs often only take a year to complete Associate degrees take 2 years to complete Washington State community colleges have direct transfer agreements with the 4 year public universities in Washington for students who completed the Associate Degree program. Spokane Community College and Spokane Falls Community College both have technical/trade programs as well as the associate degree programs.

How do I get into a Community College? Apply online for admission. Pay application fee, if applicable (SCC/SFCC free admission). Take placement test Did you know that if you place at level 3 or 4 on the SBAC and you may be placed directly into college level Math & English courses? (its free!) Community Colleges of Spokane may also use SAT/ACT scores for English & Math placement. Shoot for a score of over 550! Your cumulative GPA of 3.0 will place you into college level English at SFCC and SCC An average score of 470 on the SAT Reading/Writing sections (or ACT 19) will place you into college level English A score of 550 on the SAT Math or ACT Math score of 23 will place you into college level math

Technical/Trade School Pathway

How do I enroll in a Trade (Technical) School? Interview with an Enrollment Service Representative. Take a college entrance exam (E.g. Some tech schools have their own entrance exam.) Meet educational requirements. These could differ depending on the school Pass additional requirements: Background check Hold a valid drivers license Pass drug screening Doctor statement of general health Pay registration fee Examples of Trade/technical schools – Paul Mitchell, Carrington College, Wyo-Tech, Universal Technical Institute

Apprenticeship Pathway

What is an Apprenticeship? On-the-job training in skilled trades that are supplemented by formal classes each year. Some training programs go through the community college Refer to your handout under SCC Career-Tech programs (Apprenticeships) Training period: One to five years Must pass qualified exams Become fully qualified in a specific occupational field *** Give students a minute or two to look at the apprenticeship options

Outside Line Apprenticeship

Where Do You Find Apprenticeships? Washington State Department of Labor & Industries Apprenticeship website: http://www.Apprenticeship.Lni.wa.gov

Work Force Pathway

Entering the Work Force Washington State is ranked #2 in the nation for having the most jobs requiring higher education degrees. Competitive job market requires you to have a strong resume to prove you are the best candidate to hire. Washington State’s minimum wage is $11.00 per hour. (E.g. Idaho’s minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. This is the same as the Federal Minimum Wage.)

Job Application Complete job application online or in person. Call employer to check status of application. This personalizes your application and shows your interest in the position. Prepare for job interview. Pass drug screening. Most employers require you to pass a drug screening before they will hire you.

Pathway connections Look at the next slide and notice how the military and community college’s paths connect with the road to the university. Why are they connected and the other pathways are not?

What pathways are connected? The Military pathway pays for your education at the Community College or University level. The Community College provides you the opportunity to transfer your course work to a university at any time but generally after completing an AA or AS degree. But ALL pathways can eventually lead to opportunities in advancing your education! The Military pathway pays for your education at the Community College or University level. The Community College provides you the opportunity to transfer your course work to a university at any time but generally after completing an AA or AS degree.

What path will you be taking? You will complete or have already completed a T24 Goal in your Naviance Account.

Let’s Reflect Quickwrite! Take out your SLC folder and review you SLC handouts from last year 1. How have your goals changed this year? 2. What Pathway are you considering this year? 3. Complete your 2018 SLC STEP1: handout goals. *Look for the T-2-4 Goals section. 4. Complete Step 2: Enrichment activity handout and identify activities you have been involved in that will support your pathway.

Pair and Share! Please share with a partner what you wrote. Brainstorm as a group possible jobs in your chosen pathway and what type of education may be needed. Please share with your seminar class.

Registration Announcement Registration for the 2018/2019 school year will be January 30, 2018. More information will be available in January.

Important Registration Suggestions: Please talk with your Science, Math and English teachers about course recommendations for next year before you register January 30th.   Explore elective options and interview elective teachers. Make sure your courses align with your post- secondary pathway. Review all plans with your parents/guardian.

The End! Include your written seminar reflection to your T24 folder. Please return your T24 folder to your teacher.
