Acids and alkalis Solutions can be sorted by whether they are: acid, alkali or neutral. When a substance dissolves in water it makes a solution.

pH Acids and Bases

pH Scale We use this scale to measure the strength of an acid or base. 1-6.9 Acids 7 Neutral 7.1-14 Bases The furthest from 7 you go the more acidic or basic!

Acids

Examples of Acids Vinegar Hydrochloric Acid Battery Acid Citrus

Common Uses of Acids 1. Vinegar (acetic acid)used in pickles and in many food preparations. 2. Lemon and orange juice (citric acid) preparation of effervescent salts and as a food preservative. 3. Industry  Nitric acid and sulphuric acid are used in the manufacture of fertilizers, dyes, paints, drugs and explosives. Sulphuric acid is used in batteries,

More Common Uses of Acids - Tannic acid is used in the manufacture of ink and leather. 4. Aqua regia (Hydrochloric acid) used to dissolve noble metals such as gold and platinum. 5. Fertilizers (sulphuric acid)

Bases

Examples of Bases Soap Ammonia Blood Bleach Antacids (Tums and Rolaids)

Common Uses of Bases Ammonia, NH3 (fertilizer, cleaning agent) Sodium hydroxide, NaOH (cleaning agent, paper, pH regulator) Sodium carbonate, NaCO3 (paper, glass, detergent, toothpaste) Sodium bicarbonate, NAHCO3 (baking soda, fire extinguisher, toothpaste) Calcium hydroxide, or slaked lime, Ca(OH)2 flocculant
