What do YOU get out of this? Pearl of Wisdom “If you fail to prepare, then prepare to fail.” What do YOU get out of this? 2/5/2019

What do YOU get out of this? Pearl of Wisdom “Keep your life simple because the more you get, the more complicated it becomes.” Joe Coyhis, Stockbridge-Munsee What do YOU get out of this? 2/5/2019

Today’s Lesson 1. Read a story about a new person, Emma Today’s lesson will focus on the organizational skills needed to juggle our home and work obligations. 1. Read a story about a new person, Emma 2. Learn a step by step method for planning out a busy schedule 3. Apply the steps to several examples 4. Close with a Review & MiniQuiz 2/5/2019

Questions after reading: Emma’s Story 1 Let’s read along with the story. “Emma was in her early 50’s, a mother of four and already … Questions after reading: 1. What kind of emotional, mental and physical stress is Emma under? 2. How did she set herself up for problems? 3. Have YOU ever been in a situation like this? What happened? 2/5/2019

Time Management Poor time management is a major source of stress, and can cause serious problems at work. Good time managers are able meet deadlines by: (1). Predicting the tasks they have to do; (2). Estimating the time each will take; and (3). Scheduling them in the right order. 2/5/2019

Emma’s Busy Morning Work in small groups to complete the activity on WB p52 1. Start with the tasks from Emma’s story. Then as a group, add 4-5 other things that she probably had to do that morning. 2. Number all of Emma’s tasks in order. 3. Estimate the time needed to do each task, adding a few minutes just in case. 4. Finally, calculate her wake-up time if she is to arrive at the hotel on time. 2/5/2019

Work alone or in teams to complete the planning activity on WB p53 APPLYING THE SKILL Work alone or in teams to complete the planning activity on WB p53 Imagine that you need to run a number of errands and be back home by a certain time. Describe what you need to do: (“e.g., “I need to get groceries and supplies for my cousin's memorial feast, cook, and get to the feast by 2:00PM, 2:30PM at the latest.”) Then list out all the steps, put them in the right order, estimate the time, and calculate a starting time. 2/5/2019

Plan a FANTASY TRIP for the group! APPLYING THE SKILL Plan a FANTASY TRIP for the group! Where do we want to go? What time does the plane leave? What time do we need to get to the airport? What needs to be done BEFORE arriving at the airport? (Shower, pack, drive, breakfast, etc). In what order? How much time for each task? What time for alarm? 2/5/2019

Main Point: Good time management takes a great deal of organization and skill. It is NOT something we are born knowing how to do, but it is an important tool for workplace success. 2/5/2019

Lesson Summary Today, we’ve learned a step by step way to organize our time so that we can do what needs to be done with- out so much extra stress. This is especially important to employers. Our next lesson will focus on another advanced skill: expressing concerns in a professional way to our coworkers or supervisors. 2/5/2019

Workin’ with Tradition Key Point #1 ‘Arriving on time and ready to work’ is the first expectation of most employers. Good time management skills are essential, especially when our home lives are filled with stress. 2/5/2019

Workin’ with Tradition Key Point #2 Good time managers are able to organize themselves by prioritizing their tasks, predicting the time required for each, and beginning early enough to avoid having to rush. 2/5/2019

MiniQuiz #8 √ Let’s complete Part 1 of the MiniQuiz to test our new knowledge. In Part 2, we will apply this to Bonnie’s problem. 2/5/2019

In closing What is ONE THING you learned in this class that you will remember after leaving? 2/5/2019
