Starter Task: Annotate The following picture represents a typical Chinese city. What kind of positive/negative issues does the picture represent?

We are learning to… Describe the Chinese Education System Explain why there are inequalities in education in China Summarise the Chinese government’s policy to tackle educational inequalities.

I can… Write a basic description of the Chinese Education System Provide a detailed explanation on why some children do not receive a high quality education in China Summarise the policies the Chinese government have implemented to tackle inequality

What do you think school is like in China? In China, the education system is run by the state through a Ministry of Education. Chinese law says that all citizens are entitled to 9 years of free compulsory schooling – six years in primary school and three years in middle school (ages 6 -15 usually) After that, parents must pay if their children wish to attend high school. What do you think school is like in China? Many Chinese teenagers instead go on to vocational schools, where they learn the skills to become specialist technicians or factory workers.

Before 1949 the Chinese literacy rate was just 20%. Thanks to China’s massive economic growth, millions of Chinese people have been lifted out of poverty. Both access to education and the quality of basic education in China has greatly increased in the past 30 years. A country’s Literacy Rate refers to the percentage of people who are able to read and write vs those who are not. Before 1949 the Chinese literacy rate was just 20%. By 2013 the Chinese literacy rate was 93%.

Why do you think Literacy rates are used to measure how well a country is doing? What kind of issues are there in China that stop the literacy rates from reaching 99%?

Educational inequalities in China As we know there remain significant areas of extreme poverty in rural areas of China, and figures published by the World Bank show that three main groups of people are not experiencing these high levels of access to and quality of education: The rural poor Girls Children of urban migrant workers TASK ONE Create a mind map in your jotter and take notes on the why there are still educational inequalities in China today. Educational inequalities in China

Watch the video and take notes on the following: Rural Poverty is a major problem. All urban students now receive free tuition, and students from low-income families receive free textbooks and materials, but education opportunities for rural students are few and far between, and of poor quality. The average urban student spends around 10 years in school, while the average rural student only spends 6 years in school. 67% of urban students go to high school, compared to only 23% of rural students. In rural areas, only 20% of teachers have 4-year degrees. Watch the video and take notes on the following: What kind of problems rural schools face Why poor families are less likely to send their children to school The quality of education in rural schools Rural Schools in China

Female Students also suffer inequality in China because Chinese society has traditionally favoured boys. On average, girls receive 1 year less of schooling than boys, and their literacy rate is half that of men. Rural girls, in particular, face a double disadvantage – as rural children, they have fewer opportunities than urban children, and as girls, they have fewer opportunities than boys.

Children of Migrant Workers THINK BACK TASK! Why would the children of Migrant workers suffer from educational inequality? What problems to migrant children face when trying to register in school? Recent surveys have shown only 40% of migrant worker children in Beijing are enrolled in school compared to 100% of Beijing registered children. Many migrant workers struggle to afford the private school fees to send their children to school in the cities. Children of Migrant Workers Watch the video again and take notes about the children of Migrant workers.

TASK TWO Set 1 – Knowledge Questions How many years of free education should every child in China receive? What kinds of problems do rural schools face? Why are literacy rates a good indicator of how well a country is doing overall? What document do migrant workers and their children require to receive free education in cities? Set 2 – HOTS Questions 5. Why do girls generally receive less and poorer educations than boys in China? 6. Can you predict any problems occurring in rural China soon because of the poor quality education? 7. What kind of problems would a poor basic education lead to in later life?

What are the Chinese government doing to try and tackle educational inequality? Introduced a 12 year plan to improve rural education by renovating rural schools. The Chinese government have recognised that the deepening educational gap, especially between urban and rural children needs to be addressed. The government have slowly introduced a new curriculum (over a 16 year period) to allow children more chance to develop as individuals Offering free vocational training in rural areas for ex-migrant workers Increased the number of bi-lingual schools for ethnic minority students.

TASK FOUR Do you think the Chinese government is doing enough to tackle educational inequalities? IN PAIRS: Come up with a new policy to tackle educational inequalities in China. Create aa poster or leaflet explaining what the government is already doing to tackle inequality and ONE ADDITONAL POLICY YOU HAVE COME WITH IN YOUR PAIR. Use your notes and the internet to find interesting facts and figures to add to your policy poster/leaflet.

P.E.E Point. Explain. Example HOMEWORK “There are still significant inequalities in education in China.” Give at least two reasons to support this statement. P.E.E Point. Explain. Example
