Presentation transcript:

2019 LBAT Japan What is LBAT? LBAT (Language for Business And Technology) programs are GA Tech faculty-led summer intensive study-abroad program. In 2019, LBAT Japan is a 2 ½-month program, and students can take 3 or 4 courses and earn 9 or 12 credit hours. Location: Beppu (in Oita Prefecture) Duration: May 14 – July 28, 2019 The program starts on the evening of May 14 (Tue) when we meet at Fukuoka Airport and end in Beppu on the morning of July 28 (Sun).

Where Is Beppu? Beppu is located in the northeastern part of Kyushu Island. Beppu is a well-known resort city, famous for its numerous hot springs.

Where Will We Be Staying? During the 2019 LBAT Japan program, you will be staying at an off-campus dorm called AP House 3 of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). APU, which is located on the outskirts of Beppu, is our host university for the 2019 LBAT Japan program. (http://en.apu.ac.jp/home/?)

Program Contents - VERY Intensive You will take either 3 or 4 Japanese language classes for a total of 9 or 12 credit hours. All applicable to major/minor/certificate. - JAPN 3691 Technical & Scientific Japanese - JAPN 3692 Business Japanese - JAPN 3693 Japan Today: Toward a Sustainable Society - JAPN 3813: Conversation Practicum (optional, limited to 10 students) You have two to four 95-min. classes, Monday through Friday except on field trip days.

Program Contents – Fun! Weekend trip to Kagoshima, weekend farm-stay, field trips to companies and factories, school visit, scavenger hunt in Beppu, etc. You will have opportunities to do cultural activities such as tea ceremony and calligraphy, and have intercultural communication experience with host university students. You can make friends with both Japanese and international students at APU. There will be APU students called ‘buddies’ for the LBAT Japan students. You can also join student clubs/circles and make friends.

Program Requirements You must have completed at least JAPN2002 or equivalent with a grade of B or above with good attendance & homework submission record, and be in good academic standing by the end of Spring 2019. (If you are in JAPN 3001 or above, you need to maintain a B average in Japanese classes.) In addition, you need to be adaptable to Japanese culture. You need to self-study as much content of JAPN 3001 as possible if you will have only completed JAPN 2002 by the end of Spring 2019. Maximum number of participants: 22 (min. 10)

During the program, they gather movies and photos so that they can produce a promotion film/PowerPoint file at the end. They are also expected to participate in promotional activities, such as Study Abroad Fair and future LBAT information sessions. More detailed information will be sent from the program director once you are accepted into the 2019 LBAT Japan program.
