Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Numerator Denominator Unit fraction The number down. D – denominator D – down Unit fraction Numerator is always one

3 Mixed number Numerator Whole number Denominator The number down. D – denominator D – down Mixed number

Adding fractions (Finding the sum) 5 + = When adding fractions, only add the numerator. The denominator stays the same.

Subtracting fractions (Finding the difference) _ 2 = When subtracting fractions, only subtract the numerators. The denominator stays the same.

Change a mixed number to an improper fraction The Big “C”

5 = Ready??? + x Remember the denominator stays the same! 5 x 3 = 15 15 + 2 + 17

Let’s try it!! 2 4 = = 3 5 = = Wow!! You are good at this!!

Now let’s change improper fractions to mixed numbers = 2 8 4 3 This becomes your whole number Divide the numerator by the denominator This is your denominator This becomes your numerator

Here we go!! 2 2 = = 5 5 = = Divide and conquer!!!

Subtracting with mixed numbers 7 6 = You cannot subtract 5 from 2 so….. We need to borrow or ungroup. - 5 5 = 1

Hold the phone, it’s time to multiply! (Finding the product) Please change to a mixed number 5 1 = = Multiply the whole number and the numerator. The denominator stays the same.
