Sahara desert About 3,000 miles from east to west About 1,000 miles from north to south It is the world’s hottest desert. Hottest temperature was 136.4°F.
Sahara desert It can get as cold as 32°F. When it rains, it can be so much that it causes flash floods. 20% is sand, rest is rock and gravel.
Sahara desert Oasis – a small area in a desert that has water. There are oases scattered throughout the Sahara Desert. They provide fig, olive, and date trees. Fruits and vegetables can also be grown here.
Sahel A semi-dry rolling plain that stretches across Africa from the Atlantic to Indian Oceans. 10 to 20 inches of rain per year. Animals: goats, sheep, and cattle.

Savanna Region of tall grasses, scattered trees and herds of animals. Stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to Ethiopia. Also called the Sudan. The first humans were believed to come from this area.
Savanna There are dry parts to the Savanna As you go south, it gets wetter with hilly grasslands, good for grazing animals. Crops: corn, grains, peas, squash, mellons, and okra. Wetter areas grow rice, oranges, lemons, limes, and yams.
