Department of Civil Engineering Spatial Analysis of the Impact of Urbanization on the Ground Water in the City of Austin Student: Shipeng Fu Instructor: Dr. David Maidment HELLO, everyone , my name is shiepng Fu. I’m glad to introduce my project “” Department of Civil Engineering University of Texas
Austin,1990 Austin,2000 In the last 10 years, the growth of the population in austin is almost double. The city of austin experienced a great . Urban construction and urban could cause groundwater hydrological process change. 2My project is to investigate the impact of urbanization on the quality of ground water.
Site locations for monitoring wells This picture is the map of the city of Austin And it is also the base map of my project. And these red spots are the monitoring wells in austin. Data source: City of Austin
Data Source: City of Austin This figure shows the collected data about ground water quality in the city of Austin from 1986 to 2003. It was observed that the year of 1998 has the most comprehensive data. So, in my project the year of 1998 was used as the representative to evaluate the ground water quality. Data Source: City of Austin
Parameters for Water Quality Fecal Coliform Total Phosphorus pH value In the project, 3 parameter were chosen to characterize the water quality.
Fecal Coliform
fecal coliform mean concentrations in Austin, Texas in 1998 and early 90’s
fecal coliform mean concentrations in Austin, Texas in 1998 legend
Normal QQ plot of fecal coliform of 1998 By using
Trend Analysis of fecal coliform of 1998
Total Phosphorus
current total phosphorus concentration distribution Concentration (mg/l)

Data source: Lower Colorado River Authority Discharge points
In Summary The groundwater quality degraded with the growth of population. By using GIS, Total phosphorus and fecal coliform concentration are readily observed to be significantly related to the waste discharge, but pH value is not.
Work in progress Find Population Density Data associated with the area that has relatively worse groundwater quality Find land use data associated with the area that has relatively worse groundwater quality
