“Seven Grave Mistakes with Money!” (Part 1) Psalm 24:1

An article that claimed you and I spend 50% of our time thinking about money…

to examine three of seven grave mistakes in the use of money Purpose: to examine three of seven grave mistakes in the use of money

I Getting in NEEDLESS DEBT (Proverbs 22:7)

These are but a few who made the song “Sixteen Tons” famous…

Proverbs 22:7 “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.”

1 Corinthians 7:21-23 “Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that. For he who was called in the Lord while as slave, is the Lord’s freedman; likewise he who was called while free is Christ’s slave. You were bought with a price; do not becomes slaves to men.”

I Getting in NEEDLESS DEBT (Proverbs 22:7) A. Disqualifies Us B. Distresses Us

“Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another.” Romans 13:8 “Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another.”

I Getting in NEEDLESS DEBT (Proverbs 22:7) A. Disqualifies Us B. Distresses Us C. Discourages Us D. Divides Us

“Honey, let’s go out to eat. ” “We can’t afford it “Honey, let’s go out to eat!” “We can’t afford it!” “No, but we could afford $40 for…”

II Being WASTEFUL (Matt 25:14ff; Lk 19:11ff) A. Incurring Needless Debt B. Careless Management (usually takes two forms)

Proverbs 24:30-34 “I passed by the field of the sluggard, and by the vineyard of the man lacking sense; and behold, it was completely overgrown with thistles, its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. When I saw, I reflected upon it; I looked and received instruction. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest. Then your poverty will come as a robber, and your want like an armed man.”

III Having a MONEY-CENTERED LIFE (Lk 12:15)

1921 the world’s most “successful” money making business men got together at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago…

III Having a MONEY-CENTERED LIFE (Lk 12:15) A. Lessons to be Learned

Matthew 6:19-21,24,33 “But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither mother nor rust destroy; and where thieves break in and steal. But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also… No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon… But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.”

III Having a MONEY-CENTERED LIFE (Lk 12:15) A. Lessons to be Learned B. Beware of Greed

Luke 12:15 “And He said to them, ‘Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed, for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.’”

III Having a MONEY-CENTERED LIFE (Lk 12:15) A. Lessons to be Learned B. Beware of Greed C. Contentment is Great Gain

2 Timothy 6:6-8 “But godliness actually is a means of great gain, when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. And if we have food and covering, with these we shall be content.”

“…Julie, you’ve written over $300 in checks when there was only $10 left in your account. You are substantially overdrawn.” “But that can’t be,” said Julie, “I still have checks left.”

Conclusion and Summary: Mistakes are made with money because money training has not been taught or it has been taught and it simply has been missed. God’s Word is the source for money training. We have covered but three of the seven grave mistakes with money. Next week, Lord willing, we will cover the remaining four mistakes.
