What we know already. What was the reformation? What caused this conflict? What was the result? Was this a positive or a negative result? Why? Do we see a conflict like this today?

What you will learn today. How did Martin Luther change the religious beliefs of Europeans? (Protestant) How did Luther’s ideas spread to the rest of Europe? (Gutenberg) What was the impact of his ideas? How was each a religious reformer: John Calvin, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I? (Predestination, Theology, Church of England, The Act of Supremacy, and The Elizabethan Settlement)

How were Luther’s Ideas spread? Gutenberg's Printing Press It increased literacy and spread ideas faster. It helped spread the Renaissance and Reformation ideas. Media Cultural Diffusion

What motivated people during the Reformation? Religion: People had other religious ideas that they wanted the freedom to pursue. Power: Many people wanted to take the power that the church held. Wealth: Other people wanted to take the wealth of the church for their own gain Freedom: Some felt that the church held them down.

Assignment: You and your group will research the 4 reformations that grew out of Luther’s work. For each, identify the key figure, explain how they reformed the church (Pay attention to the key words) Decide what were the motivations of these people were.

John Calvin He was a French Reformer who lived in Switzerland. He believed in a Theocracy, predestination, and religious education for all. His motivation was religious.

Henry VIII He was the King of England He needed a male heir and wanted a divorce. “The Act of Supremacy” His motivation was power and wealth

Elizabeth I She was the daughter of Henry VIII and queen of England. She was faced with a split country “The Elizabethan Settlement” Her motives were freedom and power

The Catholic Reformation This was the Council of Trent, the reform of the Church It established: The Pope rules the church Salvation is faith and good works “The Jesuits” and the “Index of Prohibited Books.”
