Monuments Synthesis essay

Prompt

Thesis * You are presenting an argument; however, the thesis needs to reflect what is being asked. You are not asked to take a position, but you are told what to address. Although some monuments may create controversy, with careful selection of subject, location, and materials, a group or agency can create a memorial that will serve the purpose of commemorating an event or person that will inspire reflection. Through care in selecting the subject, materials, and location, a group or agency can create a meaningful tribute to an event or person.

Concession Because it’s an argument, the writer needs to address the counter- argument. This can be done with transitioning into “It is true that” or meshing the controversy into the discussion. (see A) It’s true that monuments have caused much ontroversy because of lack of attention to the subject of the memorial. Cou nter argument: Museum, Crazy Horse, Lobster fisherman Argument: Lin, Columbus, Holocau

Using sources and attribution Do not just discuss one source per paragraph; rather, use the ideas from a variety of sources to discuss an idea. Do not categorize sources. Avoid “stacking” sources. If using a source in a paragraph, do not cite it sentence by sentence. Do cite quotes Do not take the source out of context

Using sources and attribution Do NOT DROP QUOTES! All quotes must be attributed. Avoid long quotes; clip important words Make sure you cite all paraphrases.
