A Raisin in the Sun Today, we’re doing one more warm up activity before we start reading on Friday. As a recap, we’re going to start reading “A Raisin in the Sun,” a play about a black family living in the South Side of Chicago in the 1950s. Last time, we researched what life was like for African Americans in Chicago in the 1950s. What do we remember?

A Raisin in the Sun Today, we’re going to look at a poem called “A Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes, another famous author of the Harlem Renaissance. Lorraine Hansberry took the title of her play from a line in Hughes’ poem. Let’s take a closer look at the poem and see what we can figure out why she chose a line from this poem for the title of her play.

“A Dream Deferred” Before we start reading the poem, you should know: “Deferred” means to put something aside and do it later Predict: What does the title mean? What do you think the poem will be about? Let’s read it through twice!

Describe in your own words what this poem is about. 3. Circle all of the words in the poem that appeal to the senses. Is this imagery positive or negative? How do you know? 4. Look at the words that you’ve circled. What effect does Hughes’s word choice have on the reader? How are these words supposed to make the reader feel? What do you think?

Think of similes and metaphors that are different from Hughes’s but that communicate the same kinds of emotion and have the same sensory appeal. Start with the question “What happens to a dream deferred?” and then compose 5-7 questions/similes of your own. Use extra paper if you need more space.
