Textbook Great Writing 4: Great Essays 4th Edition Need it a.s.a.p. (Start Monday 5th September) Focus = Vocabulary, style & improved creativity.

Course Schedule 15 weeks (usually 2 classes/ week) Public Holidays (공휴): September 15th (목) = 추석 (Korean Harvest Festival) October 3rd (월) = Foundation Day (개천절) Midterms 30% (중간고사) = October 17th (Mon) Finals 30% (기말고사) = December 12th (Mon)

Course Goals To develop greater style, creativity and variety in your writing (essays, letters, stories, etc) To develop an interest in English literature To get students to improve their practical vocabulary and naturalness in advanced English

Course Methods There are 6 Units in the book. Units 1-3 have 3 classes each. Units 4-6 have 4 classes each. After a review of Essay structures and purposes in week 1, we will use the textbook to study 4 main style of writing (narrative, comparative, cause & effect, argumentative). In addition we will look at digital storytelling, marketing, debate and also graded reader English stories. Students will make small groups to read, study, discuss and analyse graded English novels as part of their Reading Assignments. http://english-e-books.net/ Class Online Page (find it, like it, use it):

Grading Grade Curved Class (상대평가) 30% maximum = A+/ Ao 40% maximum = B+/ Bo 그래서 비록 무슨 일이 일어날지라도 30% 학생들이 C+/Co 받아요. So no matter what happens 30% of students will get C+/Co.

Assessment (10분=지각, 10분이상 = 결석) Midterm Exam – 30% Final Exam – 30% 4 x Reading Assignments - 10% (2.5% each) 3 x Full Essays - 15% (5% each) Participation – 10% (pair work/ group work) Attendance – 5% (10분=지각, 10분이상 = 결석)
