Psalm 107

Psalm 107 is a call for the redeemed of the Lord to praise Him because God delivered His people from some circumstances and difficulties: He delivered some from wandering in the wilderness (4-9) He released prisoners from bondage (10-16) He delivered the sick from death (17-22) He delivered sailors in trouble at sea (23-32) A second major reason for praise is this: God providentially governs nature (v. 33-38) and people’s experiences (v. 39-43).

“Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary, and gathered from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.”

Why are we to give thanks to the Lord (Ps. 107:1)? Where are the redeemed gathered from (Ps. 107:2-3)? According to these verses, is there anyone that God does not want to redeem? Romans 10:13 1 Timothy 2:3-6 Titus 2:11 2 Peter 3:9 Read these verses again, inserting your own name. Have you admitted to God that you’re a sinner and accepted Jesus’ death as payment for your sins? If not, why not do it now! Read Romans 10:14. Are there some people you know who have not yet heard about the Lord Jesus? Why not look for an opportunity to tell them about Him so they can be redeemed too?

“They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; they did not find a way to an inhabited city. They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted within them.”

“then they cried out to the lord in their trouble;”

“He led them also by a straight way, to go to an inhabited city.”

“Let them give thanks to the lord for his lovingkindness, and for his wonders to the sons of men!” “For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, and the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.”

Why should we thank the Lord, according to Psalm 107:8-9? What promise does Jesus give in Matthew 5:6? Read Isaiah 55:1-3,6-7 In verse 1 what does the Lord invite us to do? What is our cost? What must we do for our soul to be satisfied and live? If we are obedient to these verses, what will God do? What will Jesus do for those who believe and come to Him (John 6:35)? Describe the response of the soul that is satisfied by God (Psalm 63:3-5).

“There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in misery and chains, because they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; they stumbled and there was none to help.”

“then they cried out to the lord in their trouble;”

“He saved them out of their distresses “He saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and broke their bands apart.”

“For He has shattered gates of bronze, and cut bars of iron asunder.” “Let them give thanks to the lord for his lovingkindness, and for his wonders to the sons of men!” “For He has shattered gates of bronze, and cut bars of iron asunder.”

“Fools, because of their rebellious way, and because of their iniquities, were afflicted. Their soul abhorred all kinds of food; and they drew near to the gates of death.”

“then they cried out to the lord in their trouble;”

“He saved them out of their distresses “He saved them out of their distresses. He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”

“Let them give thanks to the lord for his lovingkindness, and for his wonders to the sons of men!” “Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of His works with joyful singing.”

In Psalm 107:11 and 17, why were these people in the trouble they were in? Read Luke 15:11-24 What happened to the younger son? Whose fault was it? What was his attitude in verses 17-19? What was the father’s response to him (v. 20-24)? What does God often use to correct us and reprove us (Jeremiah 2:19)? Describe what discipline is like and what it produces (Hebrews 12:11). Is there something in your life that has brought you into bondage or affliction? Are you reaping the consequences of your own rebellion? Read Jeremiah 3:22a. What promise does God give to you?

“Those who go down to the sea in ships, who do business on great waters; they have seen the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; their soul melted away in their misery. They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, and were at their wits’ end.”

“then they cried out to the lord in their trouble,”

“And He brought them out of their distresses “And He brought them out of their distresses. He caused the storm to be still, so that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they were quiet; so He guided them to their desired haven.”

“Let them give thanks to the lord for his lovingkindness, and for his wonders to the sons of men!” “Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, and praise Him at the seat of the elders.”

leaves us an example to follow? In all four cases, what did these people do when they were in trouble (Psalm 107:6,13,19 and 28), which leaves us an example to follow? What does Psalm 107:8,15,21 and 31 tell us to do? According to these verses, where and when are we to give thanks and praise to God? Psalm 111:1 _______________________________ Psalm 18:49 _______________________________ Psalm 34:1 ________________________________ In the company of the upright Among the nations Continually and at all times In Psalm 107:22, what additional action are we to do besides giving thanks? According to Hebrews 13:15-16, what sacrifice are we to offer? In Hebrews 13:16, what additional sacrifice are we reminded to do, which pleases God?

“He changes rivers into a wilderness, and springs of water into a thirsty ground; a fruitful land into a salt waste, because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. He changes a wilderness into a pool of water; and there He makes the hungry to dwell, so that they may establish an inhabited city, and sow fields, and plant vineyards, and gather a fruitful harvest. Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly; and He does not let their cattle decrease.” List what the Lord does because of the wickedness of those who live in the land.

“When they are diminished and bowed down through oppression, misery, and sorrow, He pours contempt upon princes, and makes them wander in a pathless waste.”

“But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, and makes his families like a flock. The upright see it, and are glad; but all unrighteousness shuts its mouth.”

“Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things; and consider the lovingkindnesses of the Lord.”

In Psalm 107:41 what does God do for the needy? What is the reaction of the upright when they see how God deals with mankind (Ps. 107:42)? What is the reaction of the wicked? If a person is wise, what will he do (Ps. 107:43)? Read Hosea 14:9. What will a person who is wise realize about the way of the Lord? What is the difference between the righteous and the wicked as they are confronted with the way of the Lord? Consider the two ways set before you. You may have been walking in rebellion against the Lord, but He still loves you. Read Romans 5:8-10 with Isaiah 55:7. Won’t you turn from going your own way to the Lord? He has promised to abundantly pardon because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.
