Workshop for Graduate School Abroad Saturday, 10 November 2018, OIA, CI International Building 152, 9:30-12:00 Prof. Jörg Michael Dostal With Information provided by Kristina Wright, Prof. Alena Kulinich, Prof. Christian Baier and Prof. Edo Andriesse

List of Contents Discussed Countries Practical Information Germany Netherlands United Kingdom Practical Information Online Resources

Germany(1) (1) Why study in Germany? Study is usually free except for a symbolic fee, with some exceptions. Some MA programs are exclusively taught in English. Ph.D study can be based on individual supervision between student and Prof. (less common today), or take place in some university or extra-university research group Older universities often have a more student-focused city life, but the three big German cities, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, might also be very interesting for cultural reasons beyond university life.

Germany(2) (2) How to become a student? Do collect information early (at least a year ahead) German-language proficiency test before the start of the semester. might need to present certificates of pre-existing German language ability. There is an increasing number of English-only MA programs. Search online for relevant information. https://www.master-and-more.de/masterstudium-auf-englisch-in- deutschland.html https://www.daad.de/deutschland/studienangebote/international- programmes/en/ https://www.global-labour-university.org/74.html

Netherlands(1) Difference between a Master's and Ph.D. degree: Master's students are normal students who pay tuition fees. Ph.D. candidates are in most cases not students, but employees working for universities, receiving salary for their 'knowledge production' and teaching duties. The salary in the first year is around 2300 euro (before tax) and 2900 euro (before tax) in the fourth year. Check Ph.D. vacancies on https://www.academictransfer.com/en/

Netherlands(2) (1) Why study in the Netherlands? Master’s Degree Most Dutch universities are highly ranked and very international at graduate level. Around 70% of all Master's degrees are offered in the English language, so learning Dutch is not necessary to obtain a university degree. Here are 8 reasons why the Netherlands/Holland is a good choice: https://www.studyinholland.nl/about- holland/8-reasons-to-study-in-holland For scholarship opportunities: https://www.studyinholland.nl/scholarships Ph.D Candidate Working at a Dutch university means that there is no course work. offers the opportunity to do research for four years collaborate with other Ph.D. candidates and other academics teach bachelor and master's students and supervise their theses (usually around 10% of your time) It is also possible that Master's students do part of your empirical work. Also, increasingly Ph.D. theses do not have the form of a monograph/book, but consist of a collection of three or four journal articles preceded by a general introduction.

Netherlands(3) (2) How to become a student? Master’s Degree Visit the website of your university of choice: For engineering and related fields, the three technological universities are the Technological University of Delft (where many Chinese students are), Eindhoven University of Technology, and University of Twente. Wageningen University is strong in Agriculture and life sciences. The other universities can be considered as general universities, but are not strong in engineering. Students need to be good at English. The required scores are at least 550 (paper based) or 213 (internet based) for TOEFL. For IELTS a score of at least 6 is required. Tuition fee for Master’s degree in the Netherlands is between 8000 and 20000 euro per year for non-EU citizens and For more detailed information: https://www.studyinholland.nl/study-options/admission-requirements

Netherlands(4) Ph.D Candidate If you find an interesting vacancy, apply like for any other job. Write a good cover letter explaining why you are the ideal candidate for the job and demonstrate that you already have some knowledge about the topic (for example through your Master's thesis, internships or work experience). Make sure that you have two or three potential persons who are willing to write a reference letter. It helps a lot if you already published articles during your Master's study.

United Kingdom(1) (1) Why study in the UK? Top British universities (Oxbridge, LSE, UCL, etc.) have a good reputation as academic institutions and are highly valued by employers in Korea and abroad. However the tuition fees are very high. For example, the tuition fees for a one-year taught course in Social Anthropology for 2019/2020 academic year: University of Oxford (MSc in Social Anthropology): 26,960 GBP LSE (Master’s in Social Anthropology): 21,744 GBP UCL (MSc in Social and Cultural Anthropology): 21,790 GBP SOAS (MA in Social Anthropology): 18,980 GBP Search for Ph.D Studentship funding: https://www.jobs.ac.uk/phd Ranking of the UK universities in the Times Higher Education University Rankings 2019 Check on the following link: https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university- rankings/2019/world-ranking#!/page/0/length/25/locations/GB/subjects /3102/sort_by/scores_teaching/sort_order/asc/cols/stats

United Kingdom(2) (2) How to become a student? UK universities have detailed information about their admission processes on their websites. In addition, the British Council in Korea has a website dedicated to studying in the UK, which also includes information about scholarships Link: https://study-uk.britishcouncil.org/?_ga=2.229695516.1483251834.1539686443-216007379.1539686443 Apply as early as possible (application period begins in September-October for the next academic year), especially if you are also planning to apply for scholarships. The application pack would normally include: An application form (online) Supporting statement, explaining your skills and your motivation for choosing a particular programme of study CV Previous academic degree certificate and transcripts English Language Test certificate (IELTS Academic Test unusually) Two academic references that should be sent directly by the referees

Practical Information Living Environment Higher levels of crime in German and the UK in comparison to Korea, particularly in larger cities (e.g. London). Take care of your laptop, bike and other personal possessions. Do not leave your things unattended. The cost of living in Netherland is around 1000 euro per month. The cost of living is generally lower than in the UK, except for Amsterdam. Look at this website with information in Korean language: https://www.nesokorea.org/ (Neso Korea also organises information sessions and study in holland marketing events). Housing Two major options: (1) apply for university housing for students (often only offered with a long delay: you might not be able to get this kind of housing) OR (2) search for flat shares or small apartments. Do not pay money in advance. There are many online scams that take money from students for fictitious accommodation. Only pay money on signing a contract after visiting your potential accommodation. Universities would usually list approved providers on their websites. There are also charities (e.g. International Student House https://ish.org.uk) and independent institutions that offer housing to students in London (e.g. Goodenough College http://www.goodenough.ac.uk) Other Information If you should be admitted to Oxbridge colleges, try getting admission to the older colleges (the forms might allow you to put in a 'first', 'second' and 'third' choice. Make sure to select the older colleges.
