Welcome to PD Did you sign in?

Ice Breaker

PD Norms Assign a recorder. What makes for a good PD? How will we hold each other accountable to make sure we have a successful PD day?

Explore ways to integrate literature into the mathematics classroom. Objectives for Course Explore ways to integrate literature into the mathematics classroom. Characterize inquiry–based experiences that require math reasoning and communication of that reasoning. Use strategies to help all students deepen and communicate their mathematical reasoning.

Why integrate math with literature???? Allows students to reason and make sense of the math. Affords students the opportunity for productive use of discourse when explaining and justifying mathematical thinking. Helps build procedural fluency. Engage students through the use of a variety of tools including concrete materials, drawings, tables and graphs, and mathematical notation to make sense of and represent mathematical ideas. Builds confidence and perseverance in inquiry based activities.

DO NOW “Tell Me All You Can” Using a pencil and sheet of paper, use pictures, numbers, and/or words to Tell Me All You Can about the number… a.) …2 b.) …6 c.) …24 d.) …3,628,800

Table Team Activity “Multiplication is the most powerful of the four operations.” Agree? Or Disagree? Turn and talk with your table partners to discuss the above statement. (As a table, write the justification(s) for your answer on a post-it note and place it on the proper side of the chart.)

Making Connections Connect mathematical ideas or mathematical representations. Students need to learn how to connect multiplication facts. Understand how thinking about 6x8 could give them 6x9. Understand multiplication as repeated addition. Understand the Distributive Property helps combine partial products.

Break

Let’s Inquire????? Complete the following statements using your knowledge of place value (use pictures, numbers, and/or words to justify your answer): a.) 10 times as many as 1 hundred is ___ hundred(s) or ___ thousand(s). b.) ___ hundred(s) is/are the same as 4 thousands.

Read Aloud

Post Reading Reflection Now that we have read Anno’s Mysterious Multiplying Jar, is there any connection we can make to the numbers we discussed in the Tell Me All You Can activity (2; 6; 24; 3,628,800)?

Sentence Frames Students who struggle with language expression may benefit from using sentence frames. For example, consider the following frames for students to use when categorizing: Beginning: A_______________ is a__________. It is ________, because____________. Intermediate/Advanced A_______________ is a__________ , because____________ and__________.

Let’s Write about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reflective Math Literature Journal

Notebooks Include Table of Contents Page Numbers Date/Title/Time Objective/Focus Question , etc. Notes (vocabulary, practice problems, etc.) one page Mathematics Observations (journal response to reflect on lesson taught)

Vocabulary in Context Vocabulary Word Banks Teach vocabulary as an integral part of solving problems. Students need to learn the language of mathematics as they engage in math. Example, in learning about fractions, students explore how the number of parts in the whole relates to size of those parts before they are expected to use the term denominator. Word Banks Create Word Banks as new words are introduced in context. Make personal vocabulary charts Guide students to use vocabulary in communication.

Follow the directions for the activity at your table. Table Team Activity Follow the directions for the activity at your table.

Final words Take 3 minutes to view the literature at your table. Which text(s) would best work for your students? Why? How would you tie that piece of literature into your mathematics lesson? What other texts have you used in your classroom to help strengthen mathematical understanding?

Exit Ticket How are you going to implement literature into your daily lesson plans the first two weeks of school?
