Media Influence and Gangs Media influences: Television, movies, radio, and music all have a profound effect on youth development. The media has glorified and dressed up the idea of being a gangster as fun and cool. They promote drugs, sex, and violence as an acceptable lifestyle. With the way gangs are depicted in the media, it’s not too surprising that some kids would fall prey to a gang and get sucked in, in search of the power and acceptance that they crave. Mr. Lem

Gang prevention Project and Class Discussion: What is a gang? What do they do? What will be the result of being in a gang? How can we fix the problem? What can you do? What could society do? What kind of programs can we offer? Does prison really work? Is there a better way to rehabilitate?
Gang Prevention #1The family and the community are essential to the development of the child's social, emotional, and physical needs. If the family is the source of love, guidance, and protection that youths seek, they are not forced to search for these basic needs from a gang. The family and community share responsibility for teaching children the risk of drugs, morals, values, respect, discipline and the difference between right and wrong. #2 Strong education and training are directly related to a youth's positive development. Young people who successfully participate in and complete education have greater opportunities to develop into reasonable adults. #3 Conflict resolution programs teach gangs how to deal better with conflicts and help eliminate gang intimidation tactics. #4 Recreational programs such as sports, music, drama, and community activities help build a sense of self-worth and self-respect in young people. Youth involved in such activities are less likely to seek membership in a gang.
Please Remember “Be true to who YOU are. Hold on to your morals and values for they will guide you in the right direction. Think for yourself and don’t let others dictate your life.” Mr. Lem
