Presentation transcript:

3.1 Fractions to Decimals Objective: students will show an understanding on the difference between a repeating and terminating decimal. They will demonstrate an understanding on how to do long division. Students will then use this knowledge to solve comparison problems.

Terminating Decimals Terminating decimal: division ends, terminates, remainder of zero. Ex: .75 Ex: .824 Long Division: (division 3 ways) 3 divided by 4

Terminating Decimals 1/5 7/10

Terminating Decimals 9/25 1/8

Repeating Decimals Repeating decimals: pattern repeats without end. Bar notation: bar / line over digits that repeat. 2/3 5/12

Repeating decimals 1/3 5/6

Positive/Negative and whole numbers 6 1/5 -5 3/10

Compare Fraction ¼ ____ .2 -5/8 _____ -6/9

Compare fractions -3/4 ____ -2/3 7/8 _____ .87
