FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE How to figure it out!

Language that means exactly what it says. Figurative Language Language that does NOT mean exactly what it says. Literal Language Language that means exactly what it says.

HYPERBOLE A deliberate exaggeration…often used for effect. I have a TON of homework!

SIMILE A comparison of two dissimilar things using “like” or “as” Example- "And it seems to me you lived your life like a candle in the wind.” Write your own simile!

METAPHOR Comparison of two unlike things WITHOUT using “like” or “as” or even “than” One thing literally is another. Example…My heart is a stereo.

ALLITERATION The repetition of the initial consonant sound Example-Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

PERSONIFICATION Giving a nonhuman subject some sort of human characteristic Examples-The house was lonely after the people moved out.

Onomatopoeia Sound used as a word

Allusion A reference to a person, place, or thing in another artistic work (literature, art, music, history, painting, or mythology). Example: Paul’s obsession with money reminds me of King Midas.

HOMEWORK! Write a simile about the weekend. Now write a metaphor about school. Write an example of hyperbole about homework. Write an example of personification about your shoes.
