Prelude for Worship HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION Carol Schools
Welcome Daniel Palmer
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
On which the Prince of Glory died My richest gain I count but loss When I survey The wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride
Forbid it Lord that I should boast Save in the death of Christ my God All the vain things That charm me most I sacrifice them to His Blood
Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did e’re such love and sorrow meet See from His head His hands His feet Sorrow and love flow mingled down Did e’re such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown
That were a present far too small Love so amazing so divine Were the whole realm Of nature mine That were a present far too small Love so amazing so divine Demands my soul my life my all

Mark 14:1–11 Now the Passover and Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to seize Him by stealth and kill Him; 2 for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there might be a riot of the people.”
Mark 14:1–11 3 While He was in Bethany at the home of Simon the leper, and reclining at the table, there came a woman with an alabaster vial of very costly perfume of pure nard; and she broke the vial and poured it over His head.
Mark 14:1–11 4 But some were indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? 5 For this perfume might have been sold for over three hundred denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her.
Mark 14:1–11 6 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to Me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.
Mark 14:1–11 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. 9 Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”
Mark 14:1–11 10 Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to betray Him to them. 11 They were glad when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love People would flood into Jerusalem at Passover which complicated things for the chief priests and scribes.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love The Sanhedrin are not casual in their dismissal of Jesus; they are callous and calculating.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Will anyone love the Son who came to die for sin?
Sermon in a Sentence To respond to the gift of Jesus, 1) we must love Him extravagantly (3–5); 2) our giving must be motivated by Jesus’ worth; 3) we must recognize the gospel liberates us from allegiance to lesser gods (9), and 4) we must understand the options (10–11).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love 1. We must love Him extravagantly (3–5).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love This woman breaks social convention to break an alabaster vial of costly perfume and anoint Jesus. What she thinks of Jesus trumps what others may think of her.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love 300 denari was the equivalent of a year’s wages.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love If we are going to be used by God, we must be broken of self and poured out for the glory of Christ our King in whom we delight.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Christian giving is motivated not primarily by the good we can do but by the good that Christ is.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love 2. Our giving must be motivated by Jesus’ worth (5–7).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love To call the gift a waste is to underestimate the worth of the One to Whom it is given.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love “You always have the poor with you, and whenever you wish you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me.” - Jesus in v. 7
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Jesus is worth infinitely more than the sum of all other things.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love “In placing Himself above the poor, Jesus places Himself above the great commandment to love your neighbor as yourself” (Akin, 415).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Extravagant giving to Christ for the sake of Christ shows the extravagant worth of Christ.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love No sacrifice for Jesus could be too great because Christ is greater still.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love “Have you, in your life as a follower of King Jesus, ever made a sacrifice of extravagant love? Can you recall a time when you did something that really cost you? A time when you really went without something you really wanted because of a sacrifice of extravagant love for Jesus?” – Akin, 320
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love 3. We must recognize the gospel liberates us from allegiance to lesser gods (9).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love When we understand the value of Jesus in our place, He frees us from our slavery to lesser things.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Nothing Jesus could ask of us is too great or too extravagant.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love “Truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her” (9).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love 4. We must understand what is at stake (10–11).
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love By placing this beautiful story of sacrifice within the story of Christ’s betrayal, Mark shows we only have two options.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love We either treasure Christ, or we betray Him.
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love “Some people find Jesus useful because of what they think they can get from Him. Others find Jesus beautiful because they get Him.” – Akin, 323
A Sacrifice of Extravagant Love Jesus is building a Kingdom filled with people who treasure Him above all other treasures -- a people who gladly part even with their greatest treasures because Christ is greater still.

Jesus Paid It All (O Praise The One)
“Thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness watch and pray I hear the Savior say “Thy strength indeed is small Child of weakness watch and pray Find in Me thine all in all”
Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow Jesus paid it all All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow
Thy power and Thine alone Can change the leper’s spots Lord now indeed I find Thy power and Thine alone Can change the leper’s spots And melt the heart of stone
Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow Jesus paid it all All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow
And when before the throne I stand in him complete “Jesus died my soul to save!” My lips shall still repeat
Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow Jesus paid it all All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow
O Praise the One who paid my debt And raised this life up from the dead
Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow Jesus paid it all All to Him I owe Sin had left a crimson stain He washed it white as snow
