Chapter 1- Nya On chart.

Chapter 1- Salva GIST- Salva runs from the school and comes across others who were fleeing. He finds people from his village. He’s not allowed to go with men and rebels. He sleeps in barn. Awakes to find group gone. VIP’s- “Salva stayed with the group from Loun-Ariik. It was smaller now, without the men.” “They had left him.” “He was alone.”

Chapter 2- Nya GIST Nya is walking to get water and is in pain because she got a thorn in her foot. VIP- “She looked at the bottom of her foot. There it was, a big thorn that had broken off right in the middle of her heel.”(page 8)

Chapter 3 Reading Comprehension Questions 1. What has been the purpose of Nya’s journey every day? 2. Why must the old woman move on? Couldn’t she take Salva along? 3. Salva’s hopes rise and then fall. Do you think finding other Dinkas will be the answer he is looking for?

Chapter 3- Nya GIST Nya reaches the water and fills her container with muddy water. She puts the container on her head and must now head home with a sore foot. VIP’s “She untied it, scooped up the brown muddy water, and drank.” “With water balanced on her head, and her foot still sore from the thorn…”

Chapter 3-Salva GIST Salva realizes he was left behind because he is a child. Outside the barn he finds an old woman who he stays with for a few days until she tells him she is leaving because pond dried up and Salva can’t go with her. VIP’s “Salva stumbled back to the barn.” “You have seen that the pond is only a puddle now…”

Chapter 4- Nya GIST- Nya brings water home, eats and then heads back for a second trip with little sister, Akeer, who needs to learn how to get water. VIP’s- “To the pond and back-to the pond and back nearly a full day of walking.” (20)

Chapter 4- Salva GIST- Dinka group lets Salva go with them even though they don’t want him. He walks with them, very hungry and weak joined by more Dinka and Jur-chol. Buksa finds beehive-honey! VIP’s- “Salva had never been so hungry.” (23) “After about a week, they were joined by more people-another group of Dinka and several members of a tribe called the Jur-chol.” (23)

Chapter 5-Nya Gist-Nya’s family part of the, Nuer tribe, moved from their village when the rains stopped and dried up the pond. They had to go live by a lake 3 days walk away during the 5 month’s of dry season. VIP’s “The clay got wetter as she dug.” “Nya’s family did not live by the lake all year long because of the fighting.” (between Dinka & Nuer)

Chapter 6- Nya GIST- Nya realized her mother is fearful in the lake camp for the family’s safety. VIP’s- “this year she realized for the first time that her mother hated the camp.” (33) “fear..” (33) “Her mother was afraid…” (33)

Chapter 6- Salva GIST- Salva unites with his uncle who has a gun and is a leader. Marial is killed as they sleep in lion country. VIP’s- “Uncle!” “we are together now so I will look after you.” “I am sorry Salva…” “Your friend.”
