Search for Spices When the Black Death ended, the population of Europe increased again The growing population wanted Asian goods, particularly spices They used spices to keep foods from spoiling and to make medicines and perfumes During the 1400s, Muslim and Italian merchants controlled the trade routes between Asia and Europe Europeans knew direct trade with Asia would make them rich They began to look for new routes to Asia Advances in technology helped Europeans explore the oceans Mapmakers created better maps and charts of the seas European sailors learned to use the astrolabe, an instrument for determining latitude when at sea, and the magnetic compass to navigate

Searching Continues Europeans also built bigger and better ships Portugal was the first European nation to search for a new sea route to Asia In 1497, Vasco da Gama sailed around the southern tip of Africa to India In 1492, the Spanish king and queen sent Christopher Columbus on a voyage to India Although he did not know it, Columbus landed in the West Indies Later explorers realized that Columbus had found a route to a continent they had never seen before The region became known as the Americas In 1520, Ferdinand Magellan sailed around South America to the Pacific Ocean His crew was the first to sail around the world

Section 2 Southeast Asia is composed of a mainland and scattered islands It is located between China and India Modern countries there include Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Brunei, and Malaysia Ships traveling between China and India had to pass through Southeast Asian waters Between monsoon seasons, ships waited in Southeast Asian ports These ports became centers of trade and culture

India and China India and China influenced the culture of Southeast Asia Indians traveling to Southeast Asia brought ideas about government, law, art, and architecture They introduced Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam to the region In 111 B.C., China conquered northern Vietnam The Chinese ruled Vietnam for 1,000 years During that time, the Vietnamese adopted many Chinese ideas Kingdoms emerged in Southeast Asia that blended Indian and Southeast Asian ways The ruler of the kingdom of Pagan united the region in A.D. 1044 and introduced Buddhism The Khmer empire thrived between 800 and 1350. Khmer rulers became Hindus The Srivijaya nation prospered between the 600s and 1200s Its people added Hindu and Buddhist ideas to their own religious practices
