Science 5 Unit 11: Earth’s Oceans Lesson 1: What are the Oceans Like?

5 oceans or 1 world ocean?

Salinity- the saltiness of water Salinity- the saltiness of water. The more salinity (saltier) the more density. Water Pressure- the force of water pressing against its surroundings Submersible- a vehicle designed to travel under water *The deeper the water, the colder it gets. * The deeper the water, the darker it gets. greater the water pressure.

Shoreline- ocean currents or wave action cause the shorelines to shift and change. Costal Plain- the flat, low-laying land area at the seacoast. Continental Shelf- the boarder of each continent Continental Slope- the steep area were the ocean gets deeper quickly Continental Rise- lower portion of the continental slope Oceanic Trench- deep valley in the ocean floor Oceanic Ridge- underwater mountains and valleys parallel to the oceanic trench. Volcanic Mountain- become islands when they become tall enough to break through the ocean water Abyssal Plain- the large, flat area on the ocean floor

Science 5 Unit 9: Earth’s Oceans Lesson 2: How does ocean water move?

Wave- carries the energy, transferred by the wind. NOT the water Wave- carries the energy, transferred by the wind. NOT the water. Storm Surge- abnormally high water level during a hurricane Ocean Current- Carry a steady flow of water in a regular pattern. (think of a river) Gulf Stream- a warm water ocean current in the Atlantic Ocean.

El Niño- A severe weather season caused by an unusually warm South Pacific current Tides- are caused by the “pull” of the sun and the moon High Tide- the point at which the water reaches its highest place on the shore. Low Tide- The point at which the water reaches its lowest place on the shore

Shore- The edge of the ocean, caused by the action of the wind and waves. Jetty- a structure that currents cannot move.

Science 5 Unit 9: Earth’s Oceans Lesson 4: What Are Some Ocean Ecosystems?

Intertidal Zone- The area between high and low tide lines Intertidal Zone- The area between high and low tide lines. Tide Pool- includes many organisms, these organisms are safe from large ocean predators, but birds can feed on them easily. *The intertidal zone is under water during high tide. *Many intertidal organisms are exposed to air during low tide.

Near Shore Zone- The area between the intertidal zone and the open ocean. Compared to the open ocean, the near-shore zone is warm and shallow. Coral Reefs- branch-like structures built by colonies of coral polyps. Colonies- coral polyps live together

Open Ocean- the widest and deepest ecosystem in the ocean. The twilight zone is dimly lit, only some sunlight reaches this zone, Sunlight does NOT reach the Midnight or Lower midnight zones, this cause it to be very cold Intertidal Zone Open-Ocean Zone Near-Shore Zone Sunlit { Twilight{ Midnight{ Lower midnight{

Hydrothermal Vent- a volcanic hot spot on the ocean floor Hydrothermal Vent- a volcanic hot spot on the ocean floor. Home to many organisms.

Plankton- a group of microscopic organism of different types drifting in the ocean. They remove carbon dioxide from the ocean and release oxygen.

Unit 11 Test Review World Ocean- Submersibles- Salinity- Shoreline- Wave Action- Continental Slope- Abysmal Plain- Midnight Zone- Ocean Current- Cause of tides- Twilight- Polyp- Plankton- Hydrothermal Vent Organisms-

Rank for most salty to least: Least Missouri River middle Gulf of Mexico most Dead Sea What is denser, salt water or fresh water? How do shorelines affect ocean currents? Does the water or the energy move in a wave? Where do corals live? How does a volcano become an island? * What three features of the ocean make it necessary for divers to use SCUBA equipment? 1. 2. 3. * Why are tide pools both a safe and dangerous place to live?
