In global logistics, this is very much our view of the world: lines on a world map. And I won’t surprise you that more than 90% of that freight has a stowaway: it is called freight documentation… Now, each port and each transport has a digital mirror image. In fact, if we remove the background, we get a digital view of the world. A digital ocean. This immediately raises a question: where are the borders? Even if we tried, could we draw them? But there is something else, equally noteworthy: how does this data move? The information movement is based on the concept of EDI. Instead of moving paper documents we move electronic documents. In 1990 I worked at European nuclear research organization CERN when my colleagues Tim Berners-Lee figured out a better way of moving information. He called it the world wide web. Forget sending information via messages, just help yourself. That is what the web is: a massive self-service distributed information repository.
