Genesis Title: Genesis - Introduction: Results of the New Fall (Babel & Nations) Text: Genesis 10:1-11:26 Genesis 11:9 (NIV84) 9 [Nimrod] was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” By: Pastor Micah Adamson November 4, 2018 Title

Review of Genesis: Genesis 1-2: God created, separated, and populated the heavens, the earth, and the seas and made Mankind, in His own image to rule creation on His behalf (in 7 days, in 10 creative acts). Genesis 3-6a: But, people rebelled, lost their place, messed up creation, and started killing each other. Genesis 6b-9a: So, God de-created and re-created the heavens, earth, and seas through the flood. Genesis 9b: But, Noah, the New Adam, in the New Creation, immediately had a New Fall and cursed his son Ham and his grandson Canaan, while blessing his sons Shem and Japheth. Genesis 10-11: Contains the results of Shem, Ham, and Japhet in “Toldedoth/Genesis/Geneology” #4-5.

Genesis Genealogies: Genesis 10-11: 20 Generation genealogy from Adam to Abraham through Noah. Genesis 4b: 7 Generation genealogy from Adam through the ungodly line of Cain. Genesis 5: 10 Generation genealogy from Adam through the godly line of Seth. Genesis 6-9: Noah’s story, as a pause/parenthesis in the genealogy of Adam. Genesis 10-11: Familiar pattern where the genealogy of the ungodly is first. Genesis 10: 70 nations descended from Noah through Shem, Ham, and Japheth Genesis 10: Pauses at Nimrod/Peleg to tell the story of the “Tower of Babel”. Genesis 11a: Tells the full story of the separation of Mankind. Genesis 11b: Repeat of the 10 Generations in the genealogy from Shem to Abraham. Genesis 10-11: 3rd ycle of 7/10 indicating a new beginning in Genesis.

Review of Genesis 9: Genesis 9a: Setup for the story of the Tower of Babel. Genesis 9:18-19 (NIV84) 18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth. Genesis 9b: Tells the story Noah cursing Ham/Canaan and blessing Shem/Japheth. Genesis 9b: Noah’s death finishes the genealogy of Adam.

Genesis 10:1-5 (NIV84) Genealogy of Japheth 1 This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah’s sons, who themselves had sons after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog [Scythians, Huns, Eurasian step people, Russians?], Madai, Javan [Greece], Tubal, Meshech and Tiras [Tyre, Etruscan, or Italian?]. 3 The sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, Riphath and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan: Elishah, Tarshish [Spain or Phoenicia]?, the Kittim [Rome?] and the Rodanim. 5 From these the maritime peoples spread out into their territories by their clans within their nations, each with its own language.

Genesis 10:6, 7-12 (NIV84) Genealogy of Ham (Part 1 of 3) 6 The sons of Ham: Cush [Ethiopia], Mizraim [Egypt], Put and Canaan…. 7 The sons of Cush [Ethiopia]: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan. (8 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; that is why it is said, “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon [Babel], Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir [City], Calah 12 and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.)

Genesis 10:6, 13-14 (NIV84) Genealogy of Ham (Part 2 of 3) 6 The sons of Ham: Cush [Ethiopia], Mizraim [Egypt], Put and Canaan…. 13 Mizraim [Egypt] was the father of: the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, 14 Pathrusites, Casluhites (from whom the Philistines came) and Caphtorites [Crete].

Genesis 10:6, 15-20 (NIV84) Genealogy of Ham (Part 3 of 3) 6 The sons of Ham: Cush [Ethiopia?], Mizraim [Egypt], Put and Canaan…. 15 Canaan was the father of: Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, 16 Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, 17 Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, 18 Arvadites, Zemarites and Hamathites. (Later the Canaanite clans scattered 19 and the borders of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.) 20 These are the sons of Ham by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations.

Genesis 10:21-32 (NIV84) Genealogy of Shem 21 Sons were also born to Shem, (whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber [Heber].) 22 The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshur [Assyria?], Arphaxad, Lud and Aram [Syria]. 23 The sons of Aram: Uz, Hul, Gether and Meshech. 24 Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber [Heber]. 25 Two sons were born to Eber [Heber]: One was named Peleg, (because in his time the earth was divided); his brother was named Joktan. 26 Joktan was the father of: Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. (30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.) 31 These are the sons of Shem by their clans and languages, in their territories and nations. 32 These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.

Chiasm of Babel: A. The whole earth had one language (v. 1) A. Language of the earth confused (v. 9) B. Settled there [in Shinar] (v. 2) B. scattered from there [Shinar] (v. 8) C. Said to each other (v. 3) C. Can’t understand each other (v. 7) D. Come let us make bricks (v. 3) D. Come let us confuse (v. 7) E. Let us build ourselves (v. 4) E. Men were building (v. 5) F. A city and a tower (v. 4) F. The city and the tower (v. 5) G. The LORD came down (v. 5)

Genesis 11:1-9 (NIV84) Tower of Babel [Babylon] 1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. 3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel [Babylon]—because there the Lord confused [Ballal] the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Psalm 55:9 (NIV84) 9 Confuse [balla] the wicked, O Lord, confound [pallag] their speech, for I see violence and strife in the city. Confuse/Babel/Ballal (Gen. 11:9) Confound/Pallag/Divide/Peleg (Gen. 10:25)

Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV84) 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Religious Temptation: Idolatry Build a city with a tower reaching to the heavens.

Worldly Temptation: Pride Make a name for ourselves. Called/Named: God (Gen. 1:5, 8, 10) Adam (Gen. 2:19-20, 23, 3:20) Cain (Gen. 4:17, 19) Adam (Gen. 5:3) Lamech (Gen. 5:29)

Natural Temptation: Selfishness/Lack of Trust Not be scatter over the earth.

Conclusion: Romans 10:6-13 (NIV84) 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” [Dt. 30:12] (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” [Dt. 30:13] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” [Dt. 30:14] that is, the word of faith we are proclaiming: 9 That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” [Is. 28:16] 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” [Joel 2:32]
