Guidelines for Sending Emails Make emails easy to read Keep sentences short Keep paragraphs short Double space between paragraphs Use clean, easy to read font

Guidelines for Sending Emails Use a Polite Salutation/Greeting Formal Informal Good morning, Mrs. Tedora, Mrs. Tedora, Dear Mrs. Tedora, Susie, Hi, Grandma, Happy Birthday, Grandpa!

Guidelines for Sending Emails Use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation DO NOT SCREAM AT YOUR AUDIENCE CAPITAL letters indicate screaming

Guidelines for Sending Emails Subject line Never leave your subject line blank Be clear when writing your subject Indicate the reason for your email

Guidelines for Sending Emails Be polite and clear in your message Unclear Could U plz send info on your state. Clear My class is studying the history of Virginia. My project is on the historic battlefields in the Shenandoah Valley. Could you please send me some information or refer me to a good website? Thank you very much. Unclear and not very sweet Hi Grandma. We’re still on. See ya. Clear and sweet Hi Grandma. We’re still on for lunch on Sunday. We’ll be at your house at noon. Can’t wait to see ya! Sounds Rude Tomorrow at 10. Much Better Thanks for your quick reply. Tomorrow at 10 is great. See you then.

Guidelines for Sending Emails Don’t go overboard with abbreviations Emotion icons :) :( :/ These are ok in informal messages to friends and family Do not use these when composing formal emails: teacher, boss, or someone you are trying to make a good first impression with

Guidelines for Sending Emails Check Spelling This means you read your email. It is not ok to just use a spell checker Include a closing Thank you, Your student, Love,

Guidelines for Sending Emails Is email always ok? Sometimes sending an email is not good enough. In those situations sit down and write a good, old- fashioned handwritten letter. Thank you to a relative for a gift Thank you to a teacher for writing a letter of recommendation

Guidelines for Sending Emails Assessment This evening compose an email to me responding to the following two questions regarding your reading for tonight’s homework. Each question should be its own paragraph and follow all of the applicable guidelines that were presented in this lesson. Questions #1: Discuss the reading that you find the most enjoyable and why. #2 : Select one word from any of the selections that you find powerful and explain why, its significance.

SAMPLE Angela.tedora@madisonk12.us Include an appropriate subject for the assignment here Use an appropriate greeting/salutation, It is important to write a sentence or two here introducing the answers to your questions. If you just start right off typing the answers to the questions your email will be graded as unclear. The next paragraph is your answer to question number 1. This should be written in complete sentences. Remember paragraph guidelines. Followed by your answer to question number 2. Again, this should be written in complete sentences. And then your closing, and your name.
