What a memoir is and what it is not (Copy this) Memoir Form Focus For example Autobiography Biography is a genre of nonfiction (technically it is narrative nonfiction) first person “I” narrative Memoir focuses on an important event or relationship in the writer’s life. I could write about all of the cross-country moves I have made. is a genre of nonfiction where you write your entire life story. Is a genre of nonfiction where a Person A writes Person B’s story. Summarize in your own words: What is memoir and how it is different from other genres? Why it is an important genre?

Interesting practice… The Six-Word Memoir Attempt #1: Think of a good thing that happened to you in the last few weeks. Write that story in six words without using the word “I”. Write in on your “Notes” sheet.

Examples of Six-Word Memoirs Extremely responsible, secretly longed for spontaneity. Painful nerd kid, happy nerd adult.   Born in the desert, still thirsty. Watching quietly from every door frame. For Sale: Baby shoes, never worn.

Back Story With a partner, talk-out the back story behind one of the given six-word memoirs. With so few words given, there are huge gaps in the narrative. Create the story to fill in those gaps. Props for a well-thought out story that explains the words given to us and why what happened, happened.
