Parts of Speech Noun Names a person, place, thing, or idea It tells you who (person), where (place) or what (thing or idea). Like Jim, mother, Cincinnati, apple, Bengals, Communism or valley. Proper nouns are names of people or things or ideas. They are capitalized.

Parts of Speech Verb Expresses an action or a state of being. Forms the main part of the predicate of a sentence (sentences need to have a subject and a predicate). Like wiggle, walk, run, jump, be, do, have, or think (but not walking, jumping, running, etc.). “State of being”=“To Be” (is, are, am, etc.)

Parts of Speech Pronoun Is used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns Some pronouns are: I, me, she, hers, he, him, it, you, they, them, myself, itself, mine, yours, somebody, nothing, everyone, who, whose, etc. For example, “she” replaces “Jane” in “Jane is sick, so she went home.”

Parts of Speech Preposition Shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to some other word in a sentence Some examples: aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along, amid, among, around, as, at, atop, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond, by, despite, down, during, for, from, in, inside. For example, “John went inside the house.”

Parts of Speech Adjective Modifies/describes ONLY a noun or a pronoun and answers these questions: Which? What kind of? How many? Some adjectives are: big, cold, blue, and silly. Parts of Speech Adverb Modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb (everything else BUT nouns and pronouns) and answers these questions: When? Where? How? How much? Why? Some adverbs are: easily, warmly, quickly, mainly, freely, often, and unfortunately. Note: Many, but not all of them have ly at the end of the word.

Parts of Speech Conjunction Joins/connects words or groups of words (phrases or clauses) Some conjunctions are: and, as, because, but, or, since, so, until, and while. Remember coordinating FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) and subordinating AAAWWUBBIS (After, Although, As, While, When, Until, Before, Because, Instead, Since.)

Parts of Speech Interjection Expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to the rest of the sentence.   An interjection often starts a sentence, but it can be contained within a sentence or can stand alone. Some interjections are: Oh, Wow, Ugh, Hurray, Eh, Hey, and Ah. Examples: “Wow! That is one ugly dog!” or “I want to go, but, hey, I have no cash.”
