Understanding the Features of a Web Site Informational Text Understanding the Features of a Web Site

Features of a Web Site Different kinds of informational materials have different structural features. A well-designed Web site will have basic structural features that help you find the information you need.

The Web has billions of Web pages. Features of a Web Site ? How do you find the Web site you want? The Web has billions of Web pages. The World Wide Web is only one part of the Internet—the part that most of us use. The Internet is a huge global network made up of thousands of smaller computer networks.

Features of a Web Site Every Web site has a unique address, called the uniform resource locator, or URL. If you know the address (URL), you can go straight to the site. If you don’t know the address, you’ll have to use a search engine to find sites.

Features of a Web Site A search engine can quickly produce a list of Web sites relating to your topic. If you get too many results, you may have to refine, or narrow, your search. If you just search for Venus, you may get information about this . . . You might want to narrow your search to planet Venus.

Features of a Web Site When you’ve found the Web site, look for the basic structural features that most sites share. On the site’s home page, you’ll find basic information about the site. Look for the table of contents, usually on the side of the page. Click on these items to go to other pages on the site. Many sites also have links to other, related Web sites.

Features of a Web Site As you look at the pages from NASA’s Web site, identify structural features such as the home page, table of contents, and links to other sites. This is the top of one of the Web pages. Do you think this is NASA’s home page? Why or why not?
