Location, Location, Location England and a place called Arabia clashed over many different things, but mainly religion. This is the theme of this topic, so it is important to be able to locate them on a map!

The Islamic world was an empire. What does the word empire mean? An empire is a large area of land – usually containing lots of different countries – which is controlled by one powerful country or leader.

In the Middle Ages, the Islamic world covered a very large area. It spread across the Middle East and North Africa and into Turkey and Spain.

The Islamic empire contained the Holy Land. This is the area where Christ had lived and it was important to Muslims Christians and Jews. Jerusalem was the most important city in the Holy Land.

During the Middle Ages, Muslims and the Christians fought wars over the Holy Land. These wars were called the Crusades… …but we will find out more about the Crusades later.

Today we are going to look at some of the important developments that took place in the Islamic world and see how these inventions and ideas influenced life in Europe.

Key Words Nomads – People that move from place to place to find food and water. Clans – Close families that fought and lived together. 5
