Unit 3 Opener Theme: Imagination http://www.opencourtresources.com

Activating Prior Knowledge Good readers relate what they know to what they are reading. What do you know about imagination before we read these pieces? How have you used your imagination? What thoughts and feelings did you experience when using your imagination? Have you already read any books about imagination? 2/15/2019

Read Aloud: “Bears Out There,” by Joanne Ryder Based on the title, what do you think this story is about? This story is realistic fiction about a boy who imagines the bears that live in the woods near his home. Black bears are wild animals that live in the forests of North America. They eat plants, berries, fish, and small animals. When bears find places where food is abundant, they often wear trails through the forests to those spots. 2/15/2019

Discussing the Read Aloud With a partner, summarize the story. How does the boy in the story show imagination? How does imagination help the boy in the story? What did you learn about imagination? How is the theme Imagination reflected in the Read Aloud? What questions do you have about the Read Aloud or the theme? How did this story change your ideas about imagination? What do you still wonder about imagination? 2/15/2019
