Table of Contents 33. Application problems

Application problems Std – MM2G2 Define and apply trig ratios to right triangles Essential Question – How do you use trig ratios to solve real world problems?

Vocabulary Line of sight – the line that your eye follows when looking at something Angle of elevation – The angle between the horizontal and the line of sight when looking up Line of sight Angle of Elevation

Angle of depression – The angle between the horizontal and the line of sight when looking down If you flip the angle of depression over, you can see it is the same as the angle of elevation Angle of Depression Line of sight

Distance from the top, line of sight, ladder, ramp Tall, Height, Altitude, Above   Distance from the top, line of sight, ladder, ramp Angle of Elevation Angle of Depression Ground, base, horizontal distance, shadow

Steps for word problems Highlight key words in problem (from the previous slide) Draw triangle (always make it in the same direction) Put numbers on triangle that go with highlighted words Solve for missing piece (like we’ve done before)

Example 1 Suppose you have been assigned the job of measuring the height of the local radio tower. From a point of 47.3 meters from the base of the tower, the angle of elevation is 53º to see the top of the tower. How high is the tower? 53º 47.3

Example 2 A lighthouse on the shore is 208 ft tall. There is a buoy that is 500 ft out into the ocean. Find the angle of depression from the lighthouse to the buoy.
