Culture Traits

What is culture? Culture is defined as the set of beliefs, behaviors, and traits shared by a group of people. Turn and talk at your table: Discuss at least 3 examples of cultures in today’s world

Groups Ethnic group - a group of people with a common cultural element such as race, nationality, tribe, religion, or cultural background. Can you think of an example? Special roles - each cultural group assigns roles to various members of that culture. For example, older people are looked up to for leadership and advice. What other examples can you think of?

Language Dialect - a regional variety of a language with unique features, such as vocabulary, grammar, or pronunciation. What words/phrases can you think of that are different in your culture? Form of Communication - people communicate information and experience and pass on cultural beliefs and traditions.

Religion Central part of most cultures - affects social life and customs, views of the world, and provides traditions Holidays and observations - provide a time for prayer and celebration Try to think of a holiday/observation for each of the 3 monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Customs Outward display of culture - an action or way of behaving that is usual and traditional among the people in a particular group or place What are some customs of American culture? Of other cultures?

History Shapes how we view the world - historical experiences influence how groups of people see themselves and the rest of the world. Think of an historical event that shaped the way we view ourselves or others. Holidays mark important events - enable people to celebrate their heritage Think of an American holiday that’s associated with our history.

The Arts and Sports Way to preserve a culture Forms of personal expression, worship, or entertainment Music, dance, visual arts, and literature - used to celebrate a culture’s history and enrich people’s lives. Can you think of examples in our culture and others?

Government Protect citizens and maintains order Provide services - such as education and transportation infrastructure

Government Governments can be in 2 forms: Limited Governments Everyone must obey the law (even leaders) Constitutions, statements of rights, or other laws set limits on how much power government officials have so they cannot take advantage of the people Examples: Constitutional Republic, Democracy, Democratic Republics Unlimited Governments - Power belongs to the ruler or rulers General public lacks personal freedoms and human rights Examples: Totalitarianism, Dictatorship, and Absolute Monarchy

Economy Control use of natural resources Define how goods and services are made and distributed Types of economy Command economy Free market system What type of system do we have in the United States?
