Y6 Trip to France 22nd September 2017

Why go to France? Opportunities to speak French Hear native French speakers Vocabulary building Calculate prices in Euros Culture Eat French food French lessons in September linked to visit We have been wanting to take Y6 to France for a number of years. It is the natural progression from the residential in Y5, to take children abroad. We have been in contact with other primary and secondary schools who currently run trips to France as well as being in contact with the Surrey outdoor advisor for advice

How will we get there? 2 coaches from school Drive to Folkstone Channel tunnel Short drive from Calais Bologne-sur-mer We have booked using the School Journey Association (a registered charity). They run similar day trips and longer residentials for several local schools. They are very knowledgeable and have been able to give us advice on our itinerary. They provide our coaches and drivers as well as booking all of our activities. Children will eat their packed breakfast on the coach whilst going through the Channel Tunnel.

Boulogne-sur-mer Small seaside town Historic: castle & ramparts walk Plenty of shops, cafes & restaurants Small chocolate factory Hypermarket Close enough to explore in a day Preferable to Calais

Packed lunch will be eaten at the beach Packed lunch will be eaten at the beach. As long as it is not a wet day, children can sit on the beach and enjoy the sand! They may wish to bring a towel to sit on and optional bucket and spade! Seaside

Historic Boulogne-sur-mer is a walled town. The children will see parts of the castle and walk along the ramparts.

Shops and restaurants

Dinner in a brasserie Dinner will be in a French brasserie. There will be a set meal pre-ordered with meat and vegetarian options. The children will not be able to order on the day.

Hypermarket The children will complete French language activities as well as having the opportunity to buy some French food to bring home.

French activities Bingo activity/ scavenger hunt Finding French words e.g. blueberry Finding products containing certain flavours e.g. raspberry Finding the cost of a kilo e.g. onions Asking for something in a shop: Je voudrais… Paying in Euros Saying hello, goodbye, please, thank you French DVD on coach journey We will show a well-known animated DVD in French during the journey. If any families have any Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar films with a French language option, we would be grateful to borrow them. Otherwise we will have two buy at least 2 for the trip.

Children will need: Rucksack 2 packed meals for breakfast and lunch Bottle of water Spending money (Euros) Coat Bucket & spade? Towel (to sit on at the beach)

Staffing 11 members of staff (if 90 children on trip) including: Mrs Howarth, Mrs Stephenson & Mrs Haughton Parent volunteers Aiming for about 5 children in a group or 10 with 2 adults We are taking a large number of adults, the majority of which speak some French or are completely fluent. The groups will be kept small to keep children safe and give them more opportunities to speak French. Mrs Howarth and Mrs Stephenson will lead a coach each and will be the trip leaders. Parent volunteers should speak to Mrs Howarth or Mrs Tatum to register their interest. Parents will need to allow the school to retain a photocopy of their passport and will have to pay the same contribution as the children. If lots of parents volunteer, priority will be given to those who can speak some French.

Cost & consent Total cost approximately £67 (financial assistance available for PPG and FSM children) Letter going out on 20th February (includes consent) Deposit of £25 to be paid by 3rd March Confirm numbers of children & adults Confirm final cost Balance payable by end of June We can’t calculate the total cost until we have confirmation of the number of children and adults coming on the trip. Once we have this we will send out a letter with final costings. There is a reduced cost for children registered as PPG/ FSM.

Passports and insurance Group passport or individual passport Deadline for group passport forms: 20th February EHIC: apply online http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx Each child on group passport will be made an ID card for the trip A passport sized photo will be needed Insurance: arranged by school To apply for EHIC please see the website below: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/about-the-ehic.aspx A valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) gives card holders the right to access state-provided healthcare on temporary stays in other European Economic Area (EEA) countries or Switzerland. If you are ordinarily resident in the UK then it is likely that you will be considered to be insured by the UK under EU law and will be entitled to a UK EHIC. You will need to provide name, address, date of birth and NHS number (or NI number for adults). The school has an insurance policy covering all school trips so children do not need individual policies. For more information on the group passport please refer to the website below: https://www.gov.uk/collective-group-passports/supporting-documents
