I. Introduction MDC A) The most fundamental global economic pattern is the division of the world into relatively wealthy regions and relatively poor ones. LDC

B) HDI (Human Development Index) 1 – A measure created by the United Nations to rate a country’s level of development. 2 – A State’s HDI is determined by computing: Gross Domestic product per capita Literacy Rate/Amount of Education Life Expectancy

3) Highest score is a 1.00 – and indicates the most development. #1? #1 #1?

Economic Indicators of Development A) Gross Domestic Product Per Capita 1) Value of the goods and services produced in a country in one year. __________ (DIVIDED BY)___________________________ Population of the country US – GDP/capita = $41,600 (2005) Mali – GDP/capita = $809 (2005) *France – GDP/capita = 30,678 but it has a higher HDI than the US because of other indicators

LDC’s -Average 3 or fewer years of school -Class sizes are twice as large as MDC’s -Often have to learn from books published in a different language than their own (English, German, French, etc.) -Literacy rate many times -33% Primary Classroom Mauritania, Africa
