A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar. How much sugar is there altogether? We can’t add two fractions together when the denominators are different. So, we can use a fun trick called the “Butterfly Method” to help us! Let’s go to the next slide to try it out…

Day 2
What are we doing today? Agenda: Least Common Denominator (4 Square Method for adding fractions) 2. Adding Fractions & Mixed Numbers
Least Common Denominator Method You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: List the first few multiples of the two denominators Step 2: Find the least common denominator Step 3: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 4: Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator

Least Common Denominator Method – mixed numbers 2 ¼ + 1 ½ Add the whole number parts first, save that answer for later. For the Fraction Parts: List the first few multiples of the two denominators Find the least common denominator Use this to make equivalent fractions Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator Simplify your fraction and then add it back to the whole numbers from the beginning!

Adding Unlike Fractions Monday A recipe calls for ¾ cup of regular sugar and 2/3 cup of brown sugar. How much sugar is there altogether? You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: Find the least common denominator Step 2: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 3: Then add the numerators but keep the same denominator Denominators are like socks! We want them to match up before we combine them.
Modeled Examples – Mixed Numbers Monday You cannot add or subtract fractions if the denominators are different numbers. Step 1: Find the least common denominator of the fractions Step 2: Use this to make equivalent fractions Step 3: Then Add the numerators but keep the same denominator. Add the whole numbers! Simplify Your Answers!
