Unit Two: Fahrenheit 451 Overview/Objectives: Students will continue reading Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, analyzing the character development and the author’s use of literary elements and devices in developing themes in the story.

Review Last week, we analyzed how characters interact as well as how symbolism can help to advance the plot and develop a theme in the story. We also learned that Montag is beginning to question his role in his society. Today, we will discuss how Bradbury uses the relationship between Montag and Beatty to create conflict and advance the plot of the story.

Whole Class Discussion Discuss (pp 33-37): They get an alarm for a house. Who called in the alarm? What is different about this alarm from most of them? “Montag’s hand closed like a mouth…” What did he take? What form of figurative language is being used? When they burn the house, Montag tries to get the woman to leave but she politely refuses. Who does this remind us of? What does the woman hold in her hand? What does she intend to do with it? 5 minutes

Activity 1: Reading Log Review Montag’s experience with the old woman. What happens to Montag while he is there? What does he realize as a result of the old woman’s reaction to the firemen? Why is this significant to the development of Montag’s character? Record your answer on your Reading Log 5 minutes

Small Group Discussion: Review pp 33-37 With your group, discuss the following topics: What is the relationship between Montag and Captain Beatty? Compare the language used to describe Beatty and Montag. How does it contrast? How does it help advance the plot? Allow each member of the group to contribute Use your conversation stems. What do people do instead of reading books? What happens to people who don’t conform to the conventions of the society? Based on this, what would be a central theme of the novel so far? 10 minutes

Literature Circles – Day One Directions Begin with the Summarizer reading the summary to the group. Next, the Discussion Director should lead the group with the questions he/she has prepared.. Each group member should then share key points of his/her job task for the week. After each member has shared, he/she should complete the self-evaluation section at the bottom of the task sheet and the Discussion Director should complete the Weekly Assignment Check. Finally, group members choose tasks for the next meeting and make any necessary adjustments to the reading assignments. Staple all of the weekly worksheets together and turn them in.
