STARTER 9/26 and 9/27 Analyze the images below. Which individual is older? Which is younger? Explain. Learning Goal: Analyze sedimentary rock and the fossils within them to determine the relative age of each. SPI 0807.5.5 Compare fossils found in sedimentary rock to determine their relative age.

RELATIVE DATING Basic Idea: Using fossil location to recreate a timeline of history. ALWAYS found in sedimentary rocks. Oldest fossils at the bottom. Fossils and rock layers become younger the higher you go in a set of rock layers. Laundry Hamper example Newspaper/Magazine example Line up in age order activity

Correlation Rock layers in different places can be correlated, or matched up, by matching the rocks and fossils in the layers

Cross-Cutting Relationships If an igneous intrusion or a fault cuts through existing rocks, the intrusion/fault is YOUNGER than the rock it cuts through

Sedimentary rock layers are deposited horizontally Sedimentary rock layers are deposited horizontally. If they are tilted, folded or broken, it happened later.
