Situation Ethics Starter – Joseph Fletcher brainstorm Notes on one side of A4 paper… LO s To explore and consider the basic and central tenets of situation ethics   To begin to apply them to scenarios and to question it as an ethical theory

Situation Ethics “The law of love is the ultimate law because it is the negation of law…love can never become fanatical in a fight for the absolute, or cynical under the impact of the relative.” Paul Tillich

Situation Ethics Modern Christian middle way between 1) Antinomianism – complete freedom from observing any moral law 2) Legalsim – excessive adherence to law Forges a way that is based on AGAPE love

Four Pillars of Situation Ethics Use handouts to explain each of these… Pragmatism Relativism Positivism Personalism Extension – Which of these is more important and why? Extension – Agape notes

Agape – Basic Principles Altruistic – Caring for the sake of caring God is love – foundation for loving Attitudinal – not emotional Philanthropist – non-preferential society Egoism – rejected Other basics include; “Justice is loved distributed, nothing else.” The ends justify the means, variable and relative based on the situation.

Situation Ethics Can a theory that rests on agape really be workable? Potential problems – discussion “Justice is love distributed.” What does this mean?
