Abstract If you want to be impressing and influencing the decision makers, then you need to know what to say and how to say it. Led by public health experts with in-depth experience of working with faith groups, this seminar will equip you with the tools you need. If you want to know how faith groups and public health agencies can get their message to each other, then you need to be at this.

Demographic pressure

Demand pressure

Weak Citizen Engagement

Place based health

Potential leaders

The Faith Covenant Developed by the APPG on Faith and Society To support identification and development of faith communities social action Sets out principles to support commissioning of services

déjà vu? Faith Communities and Emergency Planning Guidance 2008 http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20120919132719/www.communities.gov.uk/documents/communities/pdf/846112.pdf

Orientating yourself in a new landscape Commissioners Faith Communities Lack of ability to understand religion and role in health Lack of religious literacy The least well done diversity strand in NHS (McManus and Brass,2008 and2 2013) Suspicion about motives and standards of faith communities Culture of do and deliver and worry about evidence and outcomes later Not understanding the system Not being able to articulate the benefits, challenges and outcomes meaningfully

Psychology of Expert Novice Differences Faith Communities Faith Service Commissioning Sometimes safeguarding Outcomes and evidence Commissioners Performance Sometimes outcomes and evidence People with very different knowledge sets trying to work together. Need people skilled enough to translate between the two

Key knowledge to be effective Population Need Policy Outcomes Service Delivery Diversity, Equality, Safeguarding Role of Faith Intrapersonal, interpersonal, social Working against a background of very low religious literacy on the parts of many commissioners

Understand what you’re about to try – a public health mindset Understand what you’re about to try – a public health mindset. From understanding need to showing you’ve met it What population? Where are we? Intelligence, JSNA What issue/need? (Needs Assessment) Where do we want to be? What outcomes do we want? (Strategy) What interventions fit best? (Prioritising, Planning) How do we get there? How do we know it’s working? (Evaluation) Are we there yet?
