The Middle & Southern Colonies (skgilbert)

New York (New Netherland) Originally settled by the Dutch Fur trade with the Indians New Amsterdam created to protect mouth of the Hudson river What does New Amsterdam become? That’s right – it’s NEW YORK CITY/ Manhattan

Why did people go to New Netherland? Push/Pull Factors Push: motivate people to leave their country (religious persecution) Pull: attract people to a new location (religious freedom, available fertile land, economic opportunity) Get out! Come here!

New Jersey Chartered by the Duke of York Relatively small and poor Stuck between more powerful neighbors: New York and Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania Philadelphia – City of Brotherly Love Founder: William Penn as repayment for a royal debt Settlers: Mostly Quakers -”Inner Light” - Women spiritually equal to men - Pacifists - Tolerant of other religious groups - Fair treatment of Indians Philadelphia – City of Brotherly Love William Penn Diversity: population & economics

The Other Southern Colonies Maryland – founded as a refuge for Catholics (Maryland Religious Toleration Act) Carolinas – very prosperous; rice Georgia – military buffer between Spanish Florida and the wealthy Carolinas; James Oglethorpe

Virginia has Growing Pains Continued battles with Native Americans Bacon’s Rebellion – frontier farmers revolt against the “establishment” government: Results Poor farmers would not tolerate government run by the wealthy Reduced taxes for frontier farmers Bacon dies of the bloody flux (oh yeah, its ugly) The end of indentured servitude and the rise of slavery

Key Ideas & Terms – Let’s Review Joint-stock company Powhatan John Smith House of Burgesses Royal/proprietary colony Bacon’s Rebellion James Oglethorpe Charter Puritans, Separatists Mayflower Compact John Winthrop Roger Williams Anne Hutchinson Pequot War King Philip’s War/Metacomet Salem Witch Trials
