Paris France is the largest country in Western Europe and the third-largest in Europe as a whole. It possesses the 2nd- largest exclusive economic zone in the world. France has been a major power with strong cultural, economic, military, and political influence in Europe and around the world.[7] France has its main ideals expressed in the 18th- century Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, France built the second-largest colonial empire of the time, ruling large portions of first North America and India and then Northwest and Central Africa; Madagascar; Indochina and Kouang-Tchéou-Wan; and many Caribbean and Pacific Islands
Paris France is a developed country,[8] possessing the world's 9th-largest economy by purchasing power parity and Europe's 4th largest.[9] In terms of total household wealth, France is the wealthiest nation in Europe and 4th in the world.[10] French citizens enjoy a high standard of living, high public education level, and one of the world's longest life expectancies.[11] France has been listed as the world's "best overall health care" provider by the World Health Organization.[12] It is the most-visited country in the world, receiving 83 million foreign tourists annually.[13]
Paris France has the world's 6th-largest military budget,[14] the 3rd-largest deployable force in NATO, and the 29th-largest military in the world. France possesses the 3rd-largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world[15] and the world's 2nd-largest diplomatic corps behind the US.[16] France is a founding member of the United Nations, one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, and a member of the Francophonie, the G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, and the Latin Union. It is also a founding and leading member state of the European Union and the largest EU state by area.[17] In 2013, France was listed 20th on the Human Development Index and, in 2012, 22nd on the Corruption Perceptions Index.
Paris The earliest archaeological signs of permanent settlements in the Paris area date from around 4500–4200 BC,[15] with some of the oldest evidence of canoe-use by hunter- gatherer peoples being uncovered in Bercy in 1991[16] (The remains of three canoes can be seen at the Carnavalet Museum[17] · [18]). The Parisii, a sub-tribe of the Celtic Senones, inhabited the area near the river Seine from around 250 BC,[19][20] building a trading settlement on the island, later the Île de la Cité, the easiest place to cross.[21] The Romans conquered the Paris basin around 52 BC,[15] with a permanent settlement by the end of the same century on the left bank Sainte Geneviève Hill and the Île de la Cité. The Gallo- Roman town was originally called Lutetia, or Lutetia Parisorum but later Gallicised to Lutèce.[22] It expanded greatly over the following centuries, becoming a prosperous city with a forum, palaces, baths, temples, theatres, and an amphitheatre.[23] The collapse of the Roman empire, along with the Germanic invasions of the 5th-century, sent the city into a period of decline. By 400 AD, Lutèce was largely abandoned by its inhabitants, little more than a garrison town entrenched into a hastily fortified central island.[15] The city reclaimed its original appellation of "Paris" towards the end of the Roman occupation, around 360 AD, when Julian the Apostate, Prefect of the Gauls, was proclaimed emperor.[24] The proclamation was made on the Île de la Cité. Julian remained based there for three years, making Paris the de facto capital of the Western Empire.[25]
