Media’s Use of Persuasive Techniques
QuickWrite 10/20-10/21: Firstly, please take out your “Dear Self” letters and seal them in an envelope. If you don’t have an envelope, make one with construction paper. Secondly, please jot down the following titles of the commercials you are about to view. You will watch, then reflect on their usage of imagery, word choice, etc. that persuades you to do something/buy something, so please watch closely. Now turn and discuss with your neighbor: What did you feel when you watched each one? What effective ad techniques do you notice? (music, specific characters, etc.) What was the company trying to get you to do? Were they effective? To learn more about media persuasion, go to http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/
